You learn about photography by taking photos.
Not handicapping yourself with limited use lenses.
Most of the world now including pros use zoom lenses for some reason that you fail to comprehend.
Yes there are specific uses for some prime lenses.
I use a macro and fisheye prime.

Zoom lens have always been a compromise to attain the luxury of zooming in rather than "waling in." Yet even with the most modern computer designed lenses of infinite numbers of curved surface, have they been able to duplicate the characteristics of the best single focal length lenses--you folks like to call "primes." I am speaking of the best single focal length lenses like the Goerz Daror and Dogmar lenses from Germany dating back to the 19th century up to mid-twentieth century. The best of the Tessar designs also come to mind.

Right now I see ebay is offering a Goetz Dagor lens for $1,745.00. And they have a number of other Dagor lenses for over $1000. I have one in a new Rapax shutter to 1/500th and have captured film where a person could extract a single face in a large room and blow just that face to portrait size or for that matter a jewelry pin on a person. Do that with a zoom? Zooms are a compromise to obtain the luxury of zooming.------------------Eric

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II has no compromise at any focal length nor aperture setting.

And the equipment doesn't have to be the absolute best to learn.
Another part of the learning process is what equipment one actually needs,
not a preconceived conception of what one thinks they need.

Creative people are BORN NOT MADE THROUGH REPETITION. That has always been the case. Either you "have it" or you don't. Not the camera, not the hours and number of clicks---but you either have "it" or you don't. You know I am correct. Particular in "art with the camera." You have an eye or you don't and no amount of photoshop will make you great. You catch the moment because o YOU and not your axe.----------------------ew

If you want to be a better photographer, there are two things you must do above all others: buy a mirrorless camera and use it.

Look to early TV Studio Cameras with the Lens Turrets.
This was what they did for variable focal length before ZOOM Lenses.
