Scanned negatives?

Finally was able to shoot some right proper film and when we were putting the negatives in for process, I had the option to have them scanned at base 16 or base 64? 64 was the larger image option.
Is that suitable for working with the scanned images in PS or LR? The whole scanning thing is new to me lol.
