Topatopa Mountains in Ojai, CA

This was a late afternoon shot from a few miles away. I used it as an opportunity to practice my Photoshop skills for landscapes I hope to do.

I adjusted the levels, rgb curves, added high pass sharpening, and a blue curve to take the blue out of the shadows. Finally I restored the original sky by copying the original background layer to the top layer, then masked out and deleted the original landscape to expose the edited mountains.

To my eye the saturation's a bit too high, but that's a matter of taste. I found that with hazy shots if you slightly darken and desaturate blue it reduces the haze. For that I would use the HSL tool rather than Curves. That way I can target the whole range of blue, not just the darks. For a global adjustment of blue the usual limiting factor is the sky, but in your case you can exclude the sky.

Great tip, R.G., I’ll give it a try. And less on the saturation as well which doesn’t look right today.

Here’s another version that comes across more naturally.
