I just saw found this today and was blown away.
There are two ways to to use auto masking in Photoshop. Not sure what version this came with, I'm using the latest Photoshop 2023.

The first image is what I used for a composite the image was downloaded from Pixels (pexels-cottonbro-studio-4761504)
Next is a screen capture showing the mask results using the standard Select Subject.
The second image is making the mask using the cloud.

To do this you must go into your Preferences.
Find it under the Photoshop button at top left. Go to image Processing. Move over to Select Subject Processing. In the box next to it change Device to the Cloud (Detailed results). You won't have to reboot to make the changes work.

Now back to normal screen you might have to change the Select Subject Button at top to Cloud (Detailed results), On my machine it did it automatically.

What a difference. Should help you out a lot in the future. Changing background should now be a breeze.

Thanks, but does this work on images stored on your own hard drive?

Interesting. When I save my work does it save to my machine or to the cloud?

Saves to your machine. Don't understand how it works as fast as it does. I check my cloud storage and has low usage. I only have the basic cloud.

After trying it...

I discovered that using BOTH on the subject creates a better merged mask, see illustration.

Testing on hair selection.

I believe Matt K. showed this in a recent video. Thanks for posting because I had forgotten about it already.

PS keeps progressing with it masking features. What used to take some time to accomplish is now being done fairly quickly. This is one of the many reason I use their subscription and not complain about it being $10.00 a month.

Rongnongno, how did you merge the masks? Did you have to switch clouding masking off to get the local masking?

I followed your steps and got the same results both ways . What did I do wrong ? Here is the sample which was the same both ways , on computer in PS , and changing to use the cloud as your instructions . Using the newest PS also

Im not sure. I just downloaded the above picture and tried it again. It it said it couldn't locate any subject.
I've had that happen in the past. My usual go around is to select the Object Selection Tool then draw a box around what I want to be masked. Once you let go it starts to make the mask. If not at this point go to the top and hit the Select Subject button.

It seams like it is working different each time. Although still making a very good mask.
