The vertical puts more emphasis on the tree and landscape shows the area around it. To me, both are really good. Just depends on you.

Landscape for me. If the red tree had more colored leaves on it I might say portrait.

I might suggest a combination of the two - the landscape image with some cropping on the right side would emphasize the tree but still give a sense of space. This is IMHO only!

Oddly, I find the landscape more of a portrait of the tree! I guess I find the growth behind the subject more distracting in #1, while the only distraction in #2 is the building. Of course, maybe #1 and your discussion set me up to see the portrait in #2. The human mind is a strange place, and mine in particular.
