In Sept, I sent in a renewal for my passport. The check was cashed immediately. Weeks later I still get "in processing" on the web site. I recently got an email response requesting I submit a new application! I checked my copy, and went over each section and can't find any errors. I called the "customer service" line and spoke to a representative, giving them all the info including the tracking number. She wouldn't help me and told me to submit a new application.

Has anyone experienced problems like this and how was it resolved?

thanks.

That seems unusual. My wife and I recently had our passports renewed and well as a renewal for one son and a replacement for another. All went off without a hitch albeit it took a while.

What puzzles me is the rudeness from the "customer service" person. If you don't like your job then find another one but don't take your frustrations out on people who are just looking for answers...

I’m surprised you actually got to talk to someone. It is usually very difficult to make that connection. The big issue, from my view, is to be sure you actually are connected to the government, and not some 3rd party that portrays they are the gov, when they are not. You also need an interview. One “trick” is that you can get an “urgent” appt if you are flying within like 3 days. I got an appt in Detroit for Mom am, they printed passport by 3pm, and drove to Chicago to fly that evening. But actually, to get the appointment, I just booked a flight on Travelocity, got the appt scheduled same day, and then cancelled that flight for full refund. I had to do it that way bec there was a bunch of stuff with my actual flight. I think it seems to take a few months to actually get a regular appt, so take that in to account with your travels.

I renewed my passport toward the end of 2019, right before the pandemic hit. The process was fast and went without a hitch. Starting with the beginning of the pandemic, things went downhill with passport renewal.

About 8 years ago my buddies and I were going to ride through Canada and I needed a passport. Several months before that I sent all the stuff in to Phoenix as instructed by the post office people. Weeks passed and several times I called Phoenix and talked to a person who said it was still in the works.

Two days before we were to leave I still had no passport, called again and talked to someone who knew something. She said I hadn’t gotten anything because my stuff should have been mailed to Charolettsville VA! I told her what the situation was and that gal pushed my paperwork through that day and had my passport overnighted to me, it arriving Friday evening and I left for Canada Saturday morning. Needless to say, I wrote a personal letter to that gal’s supervisor telling her that the other lady went above and beyond to save my wrinkly old butt. If Virginia hadn’t been 1,000 miles away, I would have kissed that gal, my savior!

In my experience, it is not unusual for government agencies whose performance is evaluated based upon processing time to claim processing delays resulted from a mistake made by the client. Requesting a new application allows them to restart the processing performance clock.

For what it’s worth: maybe you’re being too quick to cite the “rudeness from the “customer service” person”. Sure, most of us have dealt with reps like that but you didn’t hear the conversation so you don’t know what either party’s attitude was. You might be right on target but you might be completely wrong. Just my 2 cents.

The difference between working for the government and the private sector is that we expect results in the private sector.

Contact your state Representative and tell them what the problem is, You will be surprised at the service you will the get from the state department. The email should have explained why you needed to submit a new application.

In the Philippines, paperwork very seldom is handled expeditiously - by anyone. A couple of years ago I needed to renew my passport. This had to be done through the US Embassy in Manila, some 150 miles distant. The embassy arranged for a parcel service to pick up my paperwork and take it to their office. My new passport was delivered to me a month later!!!

A lot easier to go to your local Post Office. Had no problems.

Only at that time during the pandemic they were saying all passport applications would be delayed indefinitely
