Camera Comparison

Lately I have been watching YouTube comparisons of flagship I-Phone to Canon R5...the Canon wins of course but is is very close. It made me wonder, are they really comparing the cameras or is it photographer using these cameras, since they decide the settings.

So I decided to do the test myself.

I don't have an I-Phone or Canon...what I have is the flagship Sony and Samsung Galaxy cameras.

The Sony lens is the 70-200 2.8 ver. 2., at about 70 mm. The S22 Ultra set to photo, 108mp* 3X. I varied the distance slightly to get roughly the same frame. The A1 was set to complete auto, raw and converted to JPG, in Capture One. I probably should have just shot in jpg but I'm so accustomed to using raw, I overlooked it.

The long edges on both images were at 4000 pixels.

Obviously a normal person would not spend $10,000 on a camera and then use it exclusively in the auto mode. My point is to show where the technology is at the moment. I don't apologize for the lack of DOF in the Sony image...after all the camera picked the settings.

I hope you enjoyed. Comment are welcome.

* the S22 Ultra really does not have a 108mp sensor, its done with software, its one of those many camera manufacturer fibs they like to tell.

If those are un-retouched, I like the phone shot more.

I like the phone photo much more than the Sony. Also disappointing to see that in auto mode the entire Sony photo is not in focus.

Does your Sony have Picture Modes? Nikon has "Vivid" for example. The Sony image is kinda flat.

Yes it does. As the ISO shows lighting was low. Auto did not handle it well IMO.

Obviously the cellphone camera image is the better of the two, but we have AI and some serious computational imaging going on there. Perhaps that wasn’t a fair test as the two are so different. We do know that putting ones camera in full auto mode can have mixed results. That was an interesting test. That Galaxy 22 Ultra is pretty amazing. Thanks for sharing that test.

According to my fingers and toes 😉, there is something like a half-stop (?) difference between the two exposures. I'd guess that is due to either differing metering modes or the way the "perfect" exposure is calculated in each machine. 🤔

Hey! Now I have something to play with tomorrow!

Agree, it wasn't fair.

Agree, it wasn't fair. We are reaching the point in camera technology where software can over take hardware. There are programs available today that can produce images without using a camera. The ramifications are enormous. It will change photography as we know it. Not sure if I will like it.

Meanwhile, when my phone can produce an image like this, i'll put away my dedicated camera gear.

Its coming, hope I will be around to see it.

Overall the phone image is better, but download and + and there is some serious sharpening going on there.
It really depends what you want to view it on.
Normal viewing on my desktop looks great.

I have enough trouble getting my phone to make a phone call, let alone it else it can do / might do in the future.
