Moving Retired Equipment To A Museum

Yesterday the Union Pacific moved a train of retired equipment from Cheyenne, WY eastward to a museum in Illinois. The train consisted of two steam engines, several diesels, and some rolling stock.

Photo #1- A diesel leads the train eastward at the top of the hill at Archer, WY. Two working engines were on the train, one leading and one at the rear of the donated equipment. Some freight cars were added at the rear of the train to helping with braking. The UP 3985, a Challenger type, has the air brakes cut out and you can see a red hose along the side of the boiler for the brake pipe to by pass the steam engine's brakes. The city in the background is Cheyenne, WY.

Photo #2- A photo of the entire portion of the museum train coming downhill at Burns, WY. The car behind the second steam engine is a tool car normally used when the UP runs steam excursions in case mechanical repairs. The next car is a generator car to provide heat and light for the crew. The last Centennial double diesel is father back, UP 6936 and a former C & NW F-7 and a "E" unit were also donated.

The light was great but it was in the mid 30's with a 20 mph wind.... Pretty chilly!

Nice!! I bet those old engines were happy to feel their wheels moving on the rails again.

Very nice. It would be fun to explore the old cars and engines before and after they are rehabbed.

I understand it will run to Iowa on the UP and then interchange to the Iowa Interstate.
