I mainly concentrated on Sony because I already had them and an array of lenses that I could use. I have had a Canon T1i w LV 650nm; Canon xTi no LV 850nm; Sony A350 w/LV 720nm; Sony A700 no LV 720nm; now for mirrorless, Sony NEX 5R LV no VF FS; 2 Sony NEX6 w LV and VF 720nm; 2 Sony NEX 7 w LV and VF 720nm; converted. Plus I have converted a number of point and shoots (13) to full spectrum IR myself. Additionally, I have 3 that I do the magnet hack on. I gifted several to a friend and family members. I need to seriously consider releasing some of the back into the "wild" of the camera world! lol

I stay away from Nikon because of the difficulty of white balance for me. All my cameras have the ability to set in camera White Balance instantly. Apologies for rambling. I was hooked from the start when suggested I get an Olympus C2100 UZ 2 megapixel camera and add a 720nm filter. 12 years later I am still hooked and the C2100 is still with me.

Feel free to release any you don't want my way. LOL. It's been awhile since I have used my Nikon D300 but I'm pretty sure it has the ability to set a Custom White Balance.

I have 2 IR converted cameras. First one was an old Sony A55. Produces great results, but the autofocus is off with IR images. This is a SLR type camera and the camera uses light reflected by the translucent mirror to do its focus rather than the sensor, and since IR focuses differently than visible light, AF is off a bit. The solution is to do manual focusing.

Second camera is a mirrorless Olympus EM5ii. No IR focus issues at all. This camera has taken over completely and is an absolute joy to use for IR images.

Both cameras were done as full spectrum which means that I have to use external screw on filters. And I do have filters in different sizes for different lenses. I can also use a UV-IR cut filter and revert the camera back to visible light if I want to. This works perfectly and I can't see any difference in results compared to a non-modified camera. Also have a UV-IR cut filter that broadens the red end to include the hydrogen alpha 656nm for astrophotography too.

I actually have a 3rd camera that can do IR. But this one has been converted to be a mono sensor by removal of the CFA as well as the IR filter (and moire filter too). This is a Sony A6300. And it has been a lot of fun doing mono IR. With a mono sensor, there is no need to do demosaicing and the results end up with improved detail that demosaicing would have compromised.

Just curious, did you create Adobe profiles for all the cameras?

You do have the ability to set CWB on the D300. What NM are you considering for the conversion?

I really know nothing about this subject, so what would the standard 720nm do for me? Would that be the best start for a newbie?

I used instructions from Rob Shea. But he also supplies the profiles that can be downloaded:

Personally, I prefer doing a full spectrum conversion allowing me to use any filter that I want to use.

But if I were to have a filter added to the camera, I would use the 590nm filter since it still allows me to add a 720nm or even 850nm on the lens if desired. But this requires a camera that has filter threads to allow an external filter. I have filters in several sizes so I can use them with different lenses -- 49mm, 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, 77mm and 82mm. And I buy the cheap Chinese filters on eBay. I can't find fault with them.

Look at this site on Life Pixel for examples of what different filters will produce:

Deep B&W 830nm
Std 720nm
Enhanced Color 665nm
Super Color 590nm
Hyper Color 470nm
Super Blue Life Pixel does say what this filter is

There's always eBay.

This is the route I took. No complaints with the results.

Rob Shea's instructions for setting up the Infrared workflow is not exactly clear, and if you download his Infrared profiles, it is still not exactly clear as to how to implement them.

Here are the original instructions I followed when I used his instructions to create my own profiles and I suspect that not everyone is going to be able to follow these instructions.

https://blog.robsheaphotography.com/2020/06/29/lightroom-lut.html

These instructions are still usable with his downloadable profiles, but not all steps are needed in the above instructions.

Is anyone stuck and unable to make sense of the instructions?

First image shows what the original RAW using a 590nm filter looks like.

Second image shows the Rob Shea profiles on the right side where I picked on called "T -50, IR RB Swap G Split". The temperature offset is -50, and the Red and Blue are swapped and additionally, the Green is split between Red and Blue. Notice that there are yet more options to pick from.

The 3rd image shows some initial adjustments made in Lightroom with the color adjustments.

Finally, the 4th image shows a trip to Photoshop where NIK's Viveza was used to adjust the sky's blue color and to darken the leaves and grass and also remove the blue appearing in the sidewalk.
