The "Challenger" 3985, 5511, and diesel 6936 are being donated by the UPRR to the non - profit Railroading Heritage of Midwest America.
They will be moving from Cheyenne WY this Friday and end up in Silvis Illinois later this month.
I had the privilege of riding in the cab of the 3985 from Cheyenne to Denver Colorado several years ago, for the Frontier Days special. Sad to see it leave Cheyenne but UPRR is downsizing its fleet of old steam engines and concentrating on the 844 and the "Big Boy" 4014.
Hope you are able to see these when they move to their new home.
I went to the yard today, while they were preparing them for the move, thought I would take a few shots since I most likely will not see them again.
Wonderful series. Good job.

The 3985 is in relatively good shape, so shouldn't be real expensive to get back in operating condition.
The diesel 6936 I as told is able to run, not sure as to the condition of the 5511.
Yes, a great series. --Richard

Over the years I have taken hundreds of photographs of 3985 because it used to get into the Omaha area fairly often. My avatar is of the 3985. She is scheduled to pass thru the UP mainline where I live in Elkhorn, NE next Tuesday PM. I love that engine and believe it is more photogenic than the Big Boy. I have a sentimental attachment to 3985 and hope to see it one more time as it passes thru Elkhorn.

I agree, the 3985 was a beautiful engine.
Part of the skin has been removed, I suppose for the start of the rebuilding of the boiler, when the decision was made not to spend the money on it. So when it pass's through it won't have the look of what she did back in the day.
Thanks for commenting, and hope you get to see it passing by.
