I downloaded the image on my iPad and using the photo editor increased the exposure and lightened the shadows.

I also use the D500 with an 80-200 mm but add a 1.7 extender. I shoot in raw and post-process with ON1Photo Raw. This was shot at 1/640 F4.8 and set the ISO to auto (ISO 25600). It adds so many opportunities. You can try the program for two weeks for free.

I have a Nikon D500 and a Nikkor 70-200 2.8. My settings were 1/1000 sec and ISO 2500. Should the noise level be soo bad at these settings? Or have I done something else wrong? I am on the sideline, so I'm pretty close. This was in the middle of the field. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

Yes, just brighten it up....good shot.

I'm looking at it on a 4K laptop monitor and I don't see any noise. I agree your shot is a stop or so dark but you had to work with the conditions as they presented. Looks pretty good overall.

Actually noise is a result of not enough light. If you adjust the exposure by pushing the ISO it be will also increase noise.

A little maybe.

My wife, for years, was the school photographer for all school sports. She has found that 1/500 is sufficient to stop the motion of footballs, basketballs, and the athletes. That one change would both brighten the photo and reduce the noise. However, I concur with others who mention that this particular photo ‘seems’ to be noisy mainly because there are so many dark areas. There is, to my eye, no cause to fear camera issues.

Not lost. I ran it through lightroom, did some quick adjustments, one of which was, I increased exposure by 2.5, then ran it through Topaz denoise and sharpen.

The first photo shows how far left (underexposed it was), your original. I'm not that great. Someone could probably do better. The third one should be the second one. It's what I did before Topaz.

Try increasing the exposure and using a bit of Dehaze

I would raise Iso only as a last result. The problem here is not enough light. To fix that, either open the shutter more or slower shutter speed. The shutter speed here was high for this shot, so I would have lowered that first. 1/500 would have made a world of difference. Only when this does not give you enough exposure, would I increase iso. Iso should be as low as possible.

You don't want to lower shutter speed because your doing sports, your only alturnitive is iso, it takes practice
