Selling to KEH, MPB

So I sold a bunch of equipment to KEH recently and I am not really a satisfied client. Their online offer was better than what MPB said they would pay me, so I went with KEH. Now I have sold a lot of equipment here on UHH and everyone was satisfied and that the condition was great. So I am kind of surprised that my experience was as follows: A meter that they quoted me $145.00 on, they gave me 22.8% less! The camera body and lens (all with original boxes and like new condition) that was quoted at $1681.00, they gave me 28.8% less. Now you are correct to say that I could have rejected the pricing, but once it is in their hands and out of mine, it is hard to justify taking it back. I am posting this so that someone else will learn from my experience. I would rather have sold it to one of you, even at the lower price than to get lied to by the resellers. I may have been better off selling to MPB, if they kept their price and did not take over 20% discount off of what they suggested was the value! In any case, I am now real skeptical of KEH, and so should you!

I've recently sold about 8-10 camera bodies and lenses to B&H. On all occasions they paid exactly what the quote was via their online pricing tool and agreed with my assessment of condition. I was happy, and in some cases surprised at the quote amounts. I even had an old Tamron wide angle zoom in Canon EF-S mount that rattled. I didn't think they would even buy it, but they offered $105 via email and followed through at that amount.

I recently sold a special edition Leica Cl camera and lens. MPB gave me a much better price than KEH and others. They paid for the shipping and agreed with my almost new rating of camera and lens. They paid me exactly what they quoted and did so promptly. I am a very satisfied customer.

I have also made purchases from MPB and have also been very satisfied with equipment matching their condition rating. I will try them again if I can’t find a buyer for an item. I do have one lens, a Leica L mount, that their price offering and other vendors, was too low for me to except. So, it’s listed on eBay.

Folks really ought to consider selling to Used Photo Pro. One advantage is that they go around the country to various camera stores and have intake (buying) events. Usually 3-4 stores per week. Many with multi-day events. This is in addition to their online evaluation tool. So if they happen to be coming to your area, this is a great option. Details may be found on their website.
I have no affiliation with UPP other than being a satisfied customer.

I've sold to both KEH and Used Photo Pro. I like UPP the best. I concur with kmielen that the best way is to go to one of their buying events. I subscribe to both, but I do check their websites if I'm interested in selling. One other benefit is if they are at an existing camera store they give a bonus if you are buying from the host dealer, at least that was my experience.

I think part of the issue may be the very subjective evaluation of the equipment. I have sold to KEH and B&H many times and had the same experience in both directions. Upon receiving my equipment I usually got exactly what they quoted. One other time I got more and in one case on a lens, I got less. I asked about the one I had gotten less for and they noted a small issue with the lens that I had overlooked. I never felt anyone "lied" to me.

I like selling to KEH and B&H because I want the transaction to be quick and painless and it always is. Selling to an individual always takes time with dickering about money and shipping costs and the always present possibility of being cheated by the purchaser. Nothing like that happens with KEH or B&H.

Besides if their offer is not what you expected they will ship it back to you. Yes, I know, you have to pay, but remember they paid the cost to ship it from you to them.

No, I will have to disagree KEH and B&H are great to do business with.

Here were my experiences with selling equipment to MPB, Adorama and B&H.

MPB - Got a resonable quote for 10 EF lenses, so I sent them the lenses for sale. Got back a new quote which was about 20% less than the original. We argued on the phone and I was dissatisfied with their tactics and had them to send it all back to me at their expense. Done with MPB.

B&H - Got a reasonable quote for the same 10 EF lenses that I got back from MPB, so sent them to B&H. B&H sent me a check for the exact same amount as their quote. Happy with B&H.

Adorama - Got a reasonable quote on a 6DII plus 9 EF lenses from B&H and a better quote from Adorama, who's motto was to do better than anyone else. So I sent the camera and lenses to Adorama instead of B&H. After receiving my equipment, Adorama tried to low-ball the quote saying that some of my eqiopment was below par. I aruged with ther estimator over the phone and told them to send it all back to me so I can deal with a more reputable B&H. Only then did the estimator decide to give me the original quote amount that I was entitled to, so I left the equipment with them, and got a check in the mail. Got a resonable amount from Adorama, but was not happy with their tactics, so will not deal with them again.

KEH, Roberts, National Camera Exchange - Bought from these, but never sold anything to them. So cannot comment on their reasonableness in quoting and paying for equipment.

Bottom line - In the future, will sell to B&H only because they seem to be the most honest and trustworthy to deal with. Will never again deal MPB or Adorama in selling equipment. I will probably buy from any of the above mentioned dealers again where I find the item and the price that suites me.

In Oregon the local stores will only take used gear on consignment, which means they take a 25% cut out of the sold price. About once a year KEH, instead, visits one or two photo stores in cities about 60 to 100 miles away from where I live. I've found that drive to be most profitable. For example, had a 6 month old Fuji lens that I wanted to sell. By e-mail KEH gave an estimated offer of $970. When I drove to the dealer in Portland, the visiting KEH buyer offered $965 for the lens. I asked for $1000 and we had a deal along with a nice dinner at one of the excellent Portland restaurants.

I have only recently sold a Nikon zoom lens to KEY and I was delighted with their service. Thinking of digging out a few other unwanted units.

Yes I should have waited. I sold UPP a body once and got 10% more because I was buying lens from B&C here in Vegas. My post was mostly to warn people about how they promise one price and then screw you over. If it was just one transaction I would say no problem. But the fact that they repeated the situation of over a 23% reduction makes me feel nothing but regret that I accepted it.

My experience with mbp is the exact opposite. I have sold a few things there and every time have gotten more money. Most things I put as very good and they increased that and sent more money

I have sold several bodies and a couple lenses and two extenders to MPB in the last year. They paid exactly the quote each time directly to my checking account.
