Recently took a ride on the Cass Scenic Railroad from Cass WV to Bald Knob Peak, the third highest mountain in WV. The round trip covered 22 miles and took 4.5 hours including a 20 minute stop at the top. The geared Shay engine (circa 1910) is steam driven fired by coal.
Cass, founded in 1901 by the WV Pulp and Paper Company, is a relatively unchanged company town replete with a company store, depot and remains of the original saw mill. Amazing the train hauled 128,000 board feet of lumber per day from 1910 to 1930.

Fantastic! Loved the series!
I haven't been there yet, but it's on my list, probably next year. Nice photos...
I have a son that lives in WV. He works for the CSXRR and I am retired after 44 yrs on the RR.
My wife and I have ridden the CASS three times. It is a beautiful ride for sure.

The only problem this year was temperature. I dressed for projected 60 degrees and it was in the 80’s on top.

We went there on our vacation in 1986, but my wife was in her first month of pregnancy with our first daughter, and riding the train had no attraction to her, so we went in 2017 specifically to ride the train. The biggest point to me was seeing how the trains going opposite directions passed each other on the switchbacks. Your photos do deliver the ‘flavor’ of the place.
A great set. Beautiful photos of #2. Mahalo for sharing.
