Blacked out exposures.
The question is how do you know which shot is first shot? First of what? First shot after you turn the camera on? First in a continous burst? And is the first shot always OK?

If you set your EVF to show "exposure simulation" you would have been immediately alerted to the incorrect settings. Exposure simulation also gives quick means of setting up shots, while keeping your eye to the viewfinder.

That
might be part of the problem.
I've found the "Dummies" books on computers and networking useful. But one of their guides for a camera that I bought was terrible.
Looking on Amazon I see several other guide books for the Nikon D5500, in addition to the "Dummies" guide. I'm not familiar with them all, but have gotten guide books for other cameras from David Busch and Doug Klostermann, both of which I found helpful and would recommend.
Maybe it was just me. I know other people find the Dummies books helpful and have myself found their guides for things other than cameras to be helpful.
