How much do you listen to vinyl?
I have cartridges that are in the $2,000 range. I still have a Stanton 881 and a Sure v15 type iv. from the late 70's early 80's.
I have one that I purchased in the 80's that I just obtained a replacement stylus which cost twice what I paid when I purchased the cartridge. It just happens to still be an outstanding well regarded product.

Styli or cartridges do need to be replaced after time and use.

I listen to my records occasionally. Certainly not often enough to spend $2k on a stylus. I'd consider replacing the one I have now, though. I have about 80 or 100 albums of various styles of music and talk, including some I got from a friend's late father that include Robert Kennedy speeches and a record I can't play - a 78 RPM album of Army bugle calls. I'd be interested to hear it.

Do a google search for Audio-Technica, Sumiko, Grado, and Ortofon. I'm sure that one of these would work in your phono, and be within your price comfort zone.

I looked up B&H. They have the same price on the 4700. IF I bought it (they are closed until tomorrow for a holiday) I could use my payboo card for the purchase and save about $131 in sales taxes. That would take SOME of the sting out of it.

The holiday is Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur.
You will be happy with whatever you decide. The Denon's are very good Receivers.

Well, I just bit the bullet or said "Thank you sir. May I have another?" or some other painful statement and ordered the BRAND NEW Denon AVR-X4700H form B&H using my payboo card so t least I only have to pay list price (I pay the tax to IL, but it's rebated back on the card so theoretically I saved about $160)...only annoyance is I have to pay it all at once when the bill comes. I'll have an extra 2 yrs warranty and know that's it's not a "scratch-and-dent" unit.

As we normally say...Mazel Tov. You'll enjoy many years of entertainment with that AVR.

I looked up my receipt for my Sony STR-DE845 (5.1 system) that I currently use. I bought it May 28, 2001. I guess it was due to be upgraded anyways. I should get the new AVR on Friday. i wonder if my speakers will sound any different with a different brand of receiver and more power per channel. Do different brands of receivers have distinctive sounds when hooked up to the same speakers?

From the subjective data I've seen, different output stages (amps) could have slightly different sounds. Companies use different "routes" to provide the final output signal.

I can't win for losing....I got home from work a little while ago and checked my e-mail. Apparently Denon has some rebuilt x4700hs back in stock...and another e-mail I got from B&H said the new one just shipped out.

Stay with the new one. Any problems are more apt to be reconciled. Refurbished has a great price, but you never know. Personally, I prefer New In Box (NIB).

I guess I'll do that. Besides, B&H would charge a 15% restocking fee, mostly wiping out the savings I would have had on a refurb. Plus the tax I'd have to pay if I got it from Denon.

Just got my new X4700. Man, it's heavier than I thought it would be. I might open the box and look at it for a while and hook it up after my afternoon bus route...if I can force myself to wait that long :)

my current amp weighs 135 lbs. My old amp weighs 85 lbs. My speakers each weigh 265 lbs. It's all relative.
Enjoy your new "toy".
