For years, when I purchased a new camera I have kept the old one {if it still worked} and used it as backup {afterall, I already knew it’s idiosyncrasies} ….. and occasionally, I needed it. By the time it had served that purpose, selling it hasn’t been worthwhile ….. so I now have a closet full of old cameras.

Given that modern gear depreciates the way it does, that makes sense. Predigital it was a very different ballgame.

I also used cameras much longer back then, so a camera typically had ‘lost lots of value’ by the time I was ready to move on, and did never see a reason to purchase a backup when I already knew how to use a particular camera I already had.

Canon T2i, 2 kit lenses, 3 additional lenses, accessories, nothing pro. KEH estimated $265. Too bulky and old to lug around any more now that I’ve got new gear.

Can anyone relate to letting go of old gear? It’s harder since I inherited it from my father, but I don’t think he’d want to see me weighed down by it even though I got my start with it.

I can relate to getting rid of old gear, it's the only way I can buy the new gear, I can't buy the gear outright.

Not really as I gave mine to kids or students needing a camera etc. For a class.

Me too. He was a photography student at a local college. He got two bodies and a bag of lenses. I was done with film, lost my darkroom due to a move and Nikon wanted to charge way too much to update my lenses for newer bodies. Nikon made me angry and I've never given them another dime.

Got rid of the breech-lock lenses.
Now I only have an 18-200 living on my T1i.
(And a 50mm.)

Sad as all those older lenses are now gaining value and some much more than when they were new.
The RF mount has created a new demand for them.

I inherited the “Program AE-1” kit from my Mother. I was shocked when the Canon FD-mount 50mm gave me better photos when paired with my small-sensored Pentax Q-7 than my Takumar 50mm did. Unfortunately the Vivitar 70-210mm didn’t work as well - significant ‘purple-fringing’ when pointed in the direction of the sun even when I and the camera were actually in the shade, but the 50mm is a true tribute to Canon designers.

I've been preaching the benefits of mirrorless for years, especially how this technology enables legacy manual focus film lenses. Try catching one of meetings sometime soon.

We show the results. We talk the process. We make grass greener. We smash mirrors of misconception. The walk the math of a beautiful image: it has twice the megapixels and doesn't involve a mirror. We teach that self-confidence can be learned, and practiced, and mastered, just like buying a mirrorless camera. We show comparison images so that everyone understands the difference not just with their eyes, but that they feel the difference in the depth of their heart. We make Tomorrow is a better yesterday.

I hope it's not as confusing as you make it seem. LOL aren't you afraid that you might be turning people off with your meandering diatribe??

I’m leaning toward taking it to Samy’s to see what they’ll offer. The non-canon lenses are EF (Tokina AT-X AF 80-400, Tamron 171D AF Aspherical LD 28-200 1:3.8-5.6, and Olympus OM System ZUIKO MC manual focus 50mm 1.8.)

Are any of these lenses worth investing in an adapter to use on my new mirrorless OM System OM-1?

I gave my first camera and darkroom equip. to a fellow Hogger at least 9 yrs ago, I tried to donate it to some local schools (within 100mi radius) most of them didn't even return my calls and the rest said no thank you.

When my mother passed away my brother and I had to clean out the house to ready it for rental. We kept a few things. Sold some furniture. Gave others whatever they wanted. Even a couple of big trash bags of coats and jackets were given to some seasonal farm workers who shipped them to their families in Ecuador. Couldn't even give away the rest to charity. Those organizations just want to come in and cherry-pick the best items. It hurt to put my mother's 90yrs of memories in a dumpster knowing it will all just end up in a dumpster.
Moral of the story: Sell your gear so that your descendents don't have to end up putting it in a dumpster.

If I'm 1. not using it; 2. don't want it, I sell it.
