FWIW recently upgraded from Win 7 pro to Win 10 pro free. Several 'minor' glitches but google searches and M'soft knowledgebase info got me through it. If interested look at cnet.com for a starting point. I did purchase one of the OEM keys but was never instructed to install it. My old computer had Win 7 pro installed as an OEM version so that may have been 'good enough' for the upgrade.

Well, I am operating my Lightroom 6.12 on my trusty Windows 7 system...but I need to upgrade. My concern is for the upgrade not to create problems for LR, or for that matter, other older programs. So, any advise on what to get or what not to get. Thanks

---------

I am running LIghtroom 5.71 in Windows 11 with no problems.

I totally agree with your suggestion about the 16gb of RAM!

I actually ordered a Dell XPS 8930 with 16 gb of RAM to upgrade from an XPS 8300 for ZOOM Meetings and lighting photo editing. I IMMEDIATELY upgraded to 32 gb RAM to get the performance I was looking for.

One thought with the Win 7 to 10 upgrade is to make sure that you have sufficient memory. W10 is happy with more memory. You might be disappointed with the relative performance of the Machine on W10 vs the performance you currently experience with W7.

It is probably dumb of me to suggest it, but with so much added to Lightroom since 6.14, you should consider a gift to yourself.

I am opposed to reoccurring bills that I have control over. Adobe's marketing people figured out how to maximize profits with LR and PS with a subscription...but I'm not interested. There is always, and there always will be, something bigger, better, faster, than what I own...be it a computer, golf clubs, vehicle, or girlfriend. Thanks for the suggestion though. John

Thanks to all who responded...this helps. I will get assurances from my local computer repair/upgrade store that all will be well with an upgrade to W10 that is reported to works with my LR6.14, or a higher upgrade if assurances are there. Thanks again for your help. John

I was going to say take it to your local reliable computer repair store. Tell them what you want to accomplish and have them do it. In my case they were able to upgrade my hardware, installed the new software, and transferred all my old files. Called me a week later saying your computer is ready to be picked up. Was much cheaper than a new system and been using for over a year with no problems. Also, no problems with upgrades.

I've upgraded Windows ever since I installed LR6. Now, I'm using Win10. Be sure to deactivate LR before you remove it - if you do. You should be able to install Win10 straightaway, though. Wiping the disk and installing it fresh is too time consuming and not necessary, unless you're paying someone to do it.

Thanks for the recomendation.I will act on it. By the way, my son and I toured Scotland on the second week of May of this year, 2022. Had a great time, beautiful country, loved the Highlands and Castles, and of course Edinburgh.

If he has to reinstall pretty much it won't work because I don't think you can activate such an old software any more. However, you could upgrade the OS from Win7 to Win10 (I don't know about Win11) and keep the apps intact. Still I am not sure if it works.

If you have the serial number you can activate.
Windows 7 will "install in place" Windows 10 and keep almost everything.
Sound files, widgets, themes, etc are mostly the victims here.
