Was watching Photography Online on Youtube (great series BTW) and they posted a trivia question on the most expensive photograph ever sold. I was surprised it is Man Ray's 'Le Violon d'Ingres' taken in 1924. IMHO, it's an interesting image, especially for it's time, but for $12.5M? Here's the article with image:

I might pay $12.50 for it. Seriously; it's imaginative but I don't see anything special. Not even close.

Sorry, but that is $12.50 more than I'd give... but to each his own!

Art, and its value, is in the eye of the beholder. I’ve spent hours staring at Angel Adam’s Moonrise over Hernandez marveling at its perfection. But others think it’s just a picture of a moon.

FYI, the article mentions the previous record auction price for a photo at $4.3Million.

But the most expensive image every sold directly, NOT AT AUCTION, is Australian photographer Peter Lik's photograph entitled Phantom for a record-setting $6.5 million. Phantom, now the world's most expensive photograph ever sold, was shot in a subterranean cavern in Arizona's Antelope Canyon.

I guess someone is thrilled to have something new. I wonder what will catch his eye tomorrow.

I think you'll find that the "most" of anything is impossible to determine. As soon as someone mentions "the most," someone comes along with an even more "most." Remember how in the old westerns there was always "the fastest gun in the west"? There was always someone faster.

The same applies to "the first" or "the oldest."

Interesting and a very nice surrealist but $12.5 Million, I have a couple of Ford GT's, a Ferrari and a home in Palm Beach in mind for that kind of money....

Peter Lik's sale price has not been verified. https://blog.photoshelter.com/2014/12/the-most-expensive-photo-in-the-world-or-the-best-marketing-stunt/

Whoever bought it probably has those kind of things also, and a lot more money besides.

It's not what it is, it's who did it.
