Yeah, I don't know why Canon is doing this...it's an interesting move for sure.

Only Canon knows...

I'll just assume the number one camera company for the last 60+ years...knows what it is doing.

Canon restricting to Canon Only lenses is not a good marketing move. RF camera bodies are part of the market. Selling Canon manufactured lenses for near 10x what 3rd party lenses cost stopped cold and shifts people to used their old Canon or switch camera body brands.

It angers photographers and lens manufacturers. My guess, like the propitiatory chip containing battery law suites a decade ago, eventually 3 party RF lenses will be made legally. But, canon will have lost name brand loyalty.

Canon vs 3rd party lenses quality... While the expensive Canon lenses are as said in the article, give better image quality, AI can probably correct defects resulting from 3rd party lenses to the limit of difference perception.
Canon restricting to Canon Only lenses is not a go... (show quote)

Would you say the same thing to Apple? Or, do you only fear Canon is now beyond your reach?

If I were a manufacturer who had just spent big bucks on R&D and other startup costs only to have a company reverse engineer my design and produce an inexpensive form and fit alternative, I’d be calling in my patent lawyers and doing the same thing.

Samyang and Viltrox have already pulled their RF lenses after Canon told them to stop selling RF lenses.

I believe that many manufactures are trying to distance themselves from China. Viltrox and Tokina are Chinese Companies they may well be part of the separation. Buy. where you prefer, I choose not to knowingly buy from China. Too Each His Own!

Just not a big issue for me. First of all I'm a Nikon user. I have really appreciated some great Sigma ART glass in the past, but I wouldn't change brands even if Nikon followed suit. It is what it is. Best of luck.

Why would they be any different from any other country in regards to China?

Japan and China have a very healthy trade relationship...exports are up from China to Japan...not down.

Japan does not invest as heavily in China as it does the USA.

But Japan invests as much in China as in any other western nation...and the trend is...up.

Canon has chosen to clamp down on the compettion.
Obviously, they feel they have the muscle to do so.

Really dumb move by Canon! Glad I went the Sony route and I'd be looking at Nikon otherwise.

I realize, to gain full benefit of the RF system, you need to go with RF lenses, particularly the weight reduction. My question is does the EF to RF adaptor work on the Sigma and Tamron that I currently own?

I can understand Canon's stance. They spent the R&D money to bring this mount to market so, why shouldn't they maximize their profits? This is the same argument Big Pharm makes. I don't like it but it what it is.

Okay I should stop now before I go off on how restrictive our 'free market' is.

If I were a Canon user...I'd be picking up some of the better third party lenses right now.

Value can only go...up.

If you get the EF to RF adaptor, any EF lens would work on the RF body. And should work just as it does on an EF body.

IIRC you are not a Japanese corporation.

Haha! True..... but Canon isn't the only one. Consider Harley-Davidson who will jump on any company, small or otherwise, who attempts to sell anything resembling an H-D product even without the markings. In the short term, I don't think anyone should be surprised with Canon's move or intentions. It ain't the first time, nor the last.

That’s BS. There are motorcycles that look and sound like Harleys and have been for years.

If that is true, then Nikon and Sony will benefit from Canon's blunder.

I think almost all camera manufacturers want to do it but whether or not they have the legal right to do it.
