I have attempted something similar in PS without the original photo in the center. I did, once, do the abstract and then put the original next to is so people could see. This is a nice PS exercise, it taught me a bit. But, to me, these photos do not have the "wow" factor that makes them worthy of a contest winner (mine included.)

In this case, the stark original in the middle of the abstract does look like a very rough cut and paste. IMO, if you are going to pursue this avenue, then the original photo has to be blended in to the abstract in some way so as to make it seem like an integral part of the photo.
