How many here make timeless photos and how many make snapshots that will die with them?
I mean die by no one will care nor cull through the thousands of snapshots but dispose of them as meaningless to anyone but the author.
Considering that some of my portraits are still hanging in a few folks home since 1989... I guess I did a good job.
Now when these folks who remember the people in the portrait die, I have no clue.
Timeless is a loooooong time and effectively means nothing. Ask anyone abut some painter/photographer/sculptors by name, and you will get a blank look on their face.
The scream? What that a movie in the 80?
The birth of Venus? Eh?
The louvre? What is that?
La Joconde? ???
Pompeii? I KNOW I KNOW!!! This where they made the first pizza! No, you are wrong, he is a politician.

Forever is a really long time ...
especially near the end.

Its not very polite to cut off a troll at the knees ... especially in the very first reply.

How many ? Well, *at the least* ONE !
I regularly make timeless photographs.
If I make a "Timeless" photo it will be a mistake. I shoot for me not for an audience

Yet you seem to post them all here! 😜🤪

He says "not for an audience" and he is correct. The Gallery section is not a real audience. Its just a mutual admiration society (its in the rules).
For an actual audience you post in the Critique section. Not perfect but at least you get some actual feedback.

Portraits are timeless as you say.
And are a very good example you give.
Trolls have a talent though for saying stupid things like the end of the universe. Or other moronic extremes.
I noted ones that would be valued after the author died, but as usual the typical haters and trolls have a reading comprehension problem.

If we are talking about photos that might stay available for a very long time, I may have a few. Not really good photos but images that got saved by the wayback machine project (
https://archive.org/web/web.php).
I got a few pictures published also so that might last for some while.
Sometimes I make photos similar to painting techniques,
or (once) popular trends.
If their owners would pass it on, those might last a few years more than when I'm forgotten.
As for more, I don't Think I'd be making one anytime soon. Timeless is a very long time and we can not really predict which image/s will have the staying power or significance in the future. Suffice to say probably 99.99% of the photos I made will be forgotten and be insignificant but to a very few.
I am culling those "not so good" from the many in my files in the hope that the best will continue to be enjoyed. Tedious job. Many days i am not ruthless enough to cut deeply enough. Repeat, repeat. At least culling gives me a trip down memory lane.

I think ego gratification has a lot to do with posting pictures.

Those you showed, especially of people would likely be appreciated multigenerational.
Very perspective.

The first couple of troll posts here proved that.
