How does using a FX lens on a DX body affect the sharpness of images taken with that combo? I see where the DX in a FX body results in a smaller overall image, but have not seen comments on the sharpness of images taken with FX lens in a DX body.

Generally speaking, there is no negative effect on images using an full frame-capable FX lens on a DX crop camera. In fact, many lenses are sharper in the center, with resolution dropping off at their edges and in the corners. So cropping an FX lens might even use the "best" part of the lens. The corners of lenses often also have some optical vignetting, are darker than the center of the image. The crop reduces that too.

However, everything else being equal and depending upon what you are doing with it, you might magnify a DX image more than an FX image. For example, to make an 8x12" print from FX is about 8X magnification... while to make the same size print from DX is close to 13X magnification. This greater magnification may be more "demanding" upon lens quality. But that's only likely to show in more extreme enlargements.

I used several Nikon full frame lenses on a Nikon DX camera body. They worked extremely well.

Half of my lenses are FX and I use them on my DX cameras. No issues with sharpness at all.

I frequently use my Nikkor 500mm PF lens on my Nikon D500, and I am very happy with its reach, and it’s ability to capture birds in flight. While if may not fire as many frames per second as some mirrorless cameras, it will deliver superb images, and they are both proven performers. I also use my Nikkor 70-200mm on my D500. I use my wide angle lenses on my D850s where I believe they excel.

You can take superb photos in any format if you are skillful!

I can guarantee you it is quite possible to take a raunchy photo with a mirrorless camera of any brand, just as it is possible to do so with a DSLR of any brand! Provide an entry level camera and a kit lens into the hands of a master, and they will return with masterful images — every time!

Skill will trump equipment every time.

Works fine -- a good lens will be a good lens on either body. The DX body will use only the central image from the FX lens and so if the lens is otherwise a tad soft out in the corners on an FX body you won't see that used on a DX body. I have and use many FX lenses on DX bodies.

I agree.
Most folk like the "sweet spot" in the center of the image.
You'll get that.
I have @ 2 5gal buckets worth of FX lenses from the 50s up;
They didn't get better- nor worse- going on my DX cameras.
Keep them clean! And safe!
And I like the look of my 30yr old "silver" lenses on my D600!

Actually, you will only be using the center of the FX lens, so, it may be very sharp.
