I'd feel the same way if I hadn't looked at the price of koi. Cheapies are around $25 and up. The most expensive one ever sold fetched $1.8 million US with every price in between. We have several fish hatcheries in our area and they don't seem to be overjoyed either. Does this seem like one of those instances where technology should be able to solve the problem?

You’d think. For years I had an impulse sprinkler head triggered by an infrared sensor that would target you with a blast of water if you walked (or flew or landed) within range. Didn’t do much to dissuade the Heron, but weekly someone (or me) would walk into its range, forgetting it was on and get soaked

If it were my pond, I would be proud and over joyed to have it there.

You might not if it were eating your VERY expensive Koi.

Best of luck and keep in mind that GBHs are protected under Federal law, so don’t harm them in any way (not that you would of course)

Yep. I’m trying for the power of fright and frustration to make my pond less inviting to my long-legged nemesis.

Amen. Especially since each one of these expensive fish is designated as belonging to one of my grandchildren. Don’t want to have the “Circle of Life” discussion regarding their fish.

I made the mistake of not putting in a water line at the pond, so it’s not very practical to try that method, much as I’d like to have it as an option. I’d even take the self-spray. It’s been so hot it would be a relief.

Drama at the backyard pond this morning. After a year and a half, our pond has been ‘discovered’ by the local heron. Screen shot from the video captured by my Ring camera early this morning. *$*#&**#!

Get a Border Collie!

Back when we were into disc-dogging sports my wife and I competed against this guy. He turned his well-trained dogs into a good business...

Thanks, Marshall. Interesting approach. I’ll have to see if anyone provides a service like that around here. I don’t want to hurt the GBH, just make him feel this pond isn’t worth the hassle.

I'll bet the grandkids would like a border collie pup even more than a koi fish!
