Z9 GPS error resets camera to 2242

I just noticed that all the photos I shot the last two days have the wrong days and year in the metadata, although the time seems correct. Today shows: 03/19/2042.
Some kind of GPS glitch related to the recent solar flare? I turned off the "set clock from satellite" off and was able to manually set the clock, but I would like to get the GPS location data back with the correct day and year. This must have happened to others. I updated the firmware back when it came out. This evidently just started. When I turn the GPS back on to record location data, it resets my camera to the wrong date and the tear 2242.
Does anyone else have this problem? And more importantly, a solution?

Nikon couldnt possibly have a clue, so its a good thing you chose to ask the Genius Collective here at UHH.

BTW, what was the reply from the Great Unwashed at Nikon ?

I am not as big an idiot as you may think. While waiting for an answer from Nikon, my question was obviously for any Z9 owners that might have experienced or have knowledge about the problem, I guess that was not clear. BTW, it is impolite to post a selfie on another's post without asking.

If he had asked, I wouldn't have minded. Obviously not a Nikon fan though!

Really dont give a ratzazz whatz impolite. But *clearly* a super polite type such as yourself will update us when and if the Nikon crew replies ... and meanwhile the Genius Collective will be entertaining all of us while we await the verdict.

Obviously software glitch.
GPS protocol has CRC, so solar flares and other effects will only render some NMEA data packages unusable, which are discarded by the GPS chip.

Well...the Nikon Z9 has been called the future of mirrorless cameras. I imagine the time travel to 2242 is a testament to its ability.😜

Hello Muddy - Sorry to hear of your GPS problem. I checked several shots in my catalog from my Z9 and everything appeared spot on for me. I am running the latest firmware update - 2.1 I think. Have you updated? If so, was something corrupted in the update process?

It seems that many people have the same problem
Check it out here

and here

it seems that there is no user fixable solution in the mean time. You would have to send it in.

To the OP: How did you know User ID posted a selfie?

Thanks! Yes, I saw those posts too. Peter from The Back country forum also replied:

"This is a known bug, or at least "well known by those who know it well" which includes me and Nikon Support USA. I started a thread over on DP Review months ago if you want to follow that.

The problem is that the Z9 missed or mis interpreted a GPS rollover event that happens every 1024 weeks or 19.6 years. It then gets stuck there at 2042. If you're using the GPS to set your camera clock (whichj is otherwise independent), you'll then have incorrect dates in the exif timestamp. Nikon Support has told me that a firmware fix is needed to correct the problem but it has not been part of either the 2.00 or 2.10 updates. They did offer to fix the problem on my camera if I shipped it to their service center, but I have declined for now because I'm enjoying the camera too much to part with it for a month."
Peter

Selfie? Just a wild guess based on his posts here.

Please clear up this point: I you turn on GPS tracking it automatically sets the time and date? Can you disengage the link between GPS and date/time?

Sorry for the uneeded question, I missed MuddyValley's post above.
