Kildeer nest on the ground... rocky ground at that. Their eggs look like little pebbles.
If you get near one of their nests, mama will pretend she's got a broken wing and try to lure you away.
This one was putting on her act for me..
She had made her nest right on a walkway next to an equestrian arena! We put an orange traffic cone over it to protect it, which she reaalllyy didn't like. She loudly squawked at us and did her broken wing routine, then just sort of disappeared into some nearby bushes. About 8 hours later, after the event was over an everyone had gone home, we removed the cone and she soon came back to her nest.

Great shot Joel! I love the eyes. I wonder if your being in the kayak let you get closer than if you were on foot (it acted like a blind). If you approach on foot, they sometimes warn you by spreading their tail feathers and chirping:
