SmugMug or Flickers users questions

I have used SmugMug for photo-sharing for quite a few years. I have not found the interface to be particularly intuitive, however I muddled through it and got something I liked. Fortunately SmugMug has good support. Nevertheless, updating the site for me is time consuming. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and learn HTML?

Recently SmugMug renewed for a year, for $110/yr and that cost is way higher than it used to be ($72/yr). Their website says "Save 29% by paying annually". That would be $78 for the but they charged me $110. Also I noticed their "basic" plan seems to have disappeared. So now I am looking harder at the benefits I am getting.

My questions:

Flicker users, Flicker is free, correct? Have you noticed any differences with Flicker since SmugMug purchased Flicker?

Other SmugMug users, how do you use the site? How do you like the site? Are you happy with it? Are you considering changing since the prices have gone up?

I forgot how many, but it is only free for like 100 photos these days (used to be 1000). I paid $72 for the Pro version this year for unlimited storage.

$72 for the Pro version?!! That's not what they advertise (see attached). I think you mean the Power version? Ok thank you for that information. Might I ask when did you renew, or was it a new account?

I have Flckr Pro, not Smugmug. Renewed April 2022. First bought in April 2019 for $52, then renewed for a two year deal in 2020 at $49. Just hit again for $72. I have it on auto pay, but might need to look closer, based on your findings!

Ok that was Flicker and Flicker is no longer free. Got it. SmugMug used to have a basic plan. It looks like SmugMug has kicked those users over to Flicker.

I am turning Auto-Pay OFF now. More thought needs to be made prior to renewing next year.

Flickr has a FREE version in which you can post/store up to 1,000 images. The Pro version includes unlimited image uploads/storage. I find Flickr to be very easy to use. The only thing I don't like are the "awards" which I stay away from (others are looking for awards which really don't mean anything other than a gesture).

I have used Shutterfly for many years. As far as I know, it's free and no limit to the number of photos. While my file sharing has not been active for a couple of years, My site is still available.

If you are using Adobe’s subscription version of Lightroom and Photoshop, they give you Portfolio that includes up to 5 different sites. It’s easy to use and I’ve seen some UHH’er sites that are quite stunning.

I am not hijacking here. But do have a few questions.

What is your purpose for using either? You say sharing but do you allow downloads or just viewing? Are you selling photos or just displaying them? If you are selling / allow downloads then carry on.

But if it’s just to show your pics do you have a LR/PS subscription? If so they have a free web site to display pics that works quite well. With a little bit of work I figured it out and have an acceptable site. It has no commerce.

I believe that Flickr was purchased by Smugmug. I have both.

I set up a smugmug account because I wanted a convenient way to deliver photos to clients. I was hoping if they installed the app on their phone that they would get notified when I uploaded photos for them and then they could post directly to social media from the app or download for whatever purpose. I couldn't get it to work like that and let the trial lapse. I'd use whatever service offered similar functionality but I'm not really sure if clients will install an app these days.

I built My Adobe Portfolio WEBSITE and since I have the Subscription, I happen to be doing very well. I have my Business Cards with the info. that a Potential Client can go to and order Prints. I still have to add more Photos though and I'am with Fine Art America and after People punch my name of my Photography Business, I will then show up on the very Top of the Google Page. And Pixels.Com has some of my Images showing right on the Google Page. But, I give credit to Adobe for making My SEO Stand Out, plus not many people out there have my rare Name so that helps. I would encourage My Fellow Photogs to get the Adobe Subscription and then setup Portfolio and You get LRC and Photoshop CC to boot. I Thank You for pointing this out.

I'm not 100$ certain, but I believe you can still have 1000 images on a free flickr account, as long as they are public.

Hi ChrisKet, Yes I have been an Adobe user since the end of Aperture. I know of portfolio, i confess I have not done a lot with it, but maybe I need to re-examine it. Can you explain, what what is meant by 5 different sites?

Sharing photos with friends. And I keep my portfolio there as well.

Allow downloads.

Not selling.

Yes long term Photography Plan subscriber.

I think that is what ChrisKet suggested. It could be a very good solution as I already have the subscription.
I will look into it. Thank you.
