Hi folks !

Nikon came out with this new 800mm lens and on the future release list, there will be a 200-600mm lens. Do you think it would be possible for Nikon, Canon, Sony or any other major lens company to built a 300-800mm telephoto or 400-800 telephoto range lens ? Would that be even possible ? Would that be something photographers would like to purchase ? Just a taught out of the box on this beautiful Sunday morning.

Regards,

Eric

I'm sure they could! How much money do you have?

Nikon's latest Z lenses have been winners so far. I'm hoping that the 200-600mm will be one also - we'll see.

Engineering and manufacturing should be well within the ability of the lens manufacturers. Keeping in mind that they are and that they need to be, a profitable business, there needs to be a healthy market for them to do so.

Lenses are durable goods and they are not consumable. Each time someone buys one, that is one less customer for that same lens.

You will pay not only for the lens you buy, but also for the lenses it will replace. There is much for you to learn about photographic equipment and its costs.

Of course it is possible. Sigma did a humongous 300-800 years ago.

Thank,s for every response. I own a D500 paired with Nikon 200 500mm + 1.4 tele. Waiting for mirrorless equivalent and +++ that will come out in the future. I presume the 200 600mm lens will replace the 200 500mm. That,s why I came out with this question of a longer zoom lens up to 800mm not having any knowledge on the conception of construction concept behind such a dream beast.

Eric

It surely was humongous...and so was the $25,000 price tag. I'm not sure how many they actually built.

Nikon made this 1200-1700mm lens. They could build the 300-800mm lens that you want.

Sigma makes a 300-800mm F:5.6 AF right now and is nowhere near $25,000,but it is large and requires a strudy tripod. I own the 800mm F:5.6 AF of Sigma's.

My current list for Florida this fall will be my current Sony a9 with the 200-600 and the new Z9 with the Nikon 800. I believe these two will get me all the wildlife shots I need.
I really hope Nikon's future 200-600 will have a 1/4 turn to go from 200-600 like my Sony and have the same beautiful look. But I am not holding my breath.

Interesting question.
Canon makes a very small inexpensive,
lightweight 800mm that is easily holdable all day.
Also a similar 600mm.
To use the same technology and simple design principles a 400-800mm might be possible and stay small and inexpensive.

My Sony HX-99 already has a 24-720 mm Zeiss lens, the camera shoots RAW and is very capable of enlarging to a very sharp 20X30 print. Need anything else?
