When it comes to adjusting the levels on an image, I am not a happy camper with the level layer, it is too coarse and quite frankly not all that good.
I use Level only when I need to find the black point in the image I am working on. TO do this I use the probe, select an area and place a info point there. The probe area is set at 3x3. To adjust, I use the level RGB channels, only two, not all three. Experience and try & error allow me to decide which channel to leave alone. Once dome I merge the pixel layer and the level layer then transform the object onto a smart layer.
At this point I use the ACR filter to adjust whatever is still needed. There are more options to adjust just about anything, and especially the image luminosity. Level just does not have the flexibility I require and need.
Finishing touch? A color selection layer, of course.
I do like Levels for adjusting the Black AND the White points of a file. Sometimes I use the lower set of adjustment sliders to fine tune contrast because it is so much easier to LOWER contrast there.
