Don't know if he recommends it, but a laser sight like the Olympus/OMDS EE-1 or some similar brand for cameras and guns really helps with panning shots.

I have one but it really only works well when the birds are at the same distance - otherwise it must be readjusted. So, I don't use it but will try it in different settings.
