Kansas City Trip Last Week

I had the opportunity to attend the annual convention of the Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeler's Society in Overland Park (Kansas City), Kansas last week. As mentioned, I took three cameras, each equipped with a single lens, just to test the feasibility of doing photography at such a meeting with a minimum of equipment. The cameras/lenses were a D500 with Nikkor 24-120mm f/4, D850 with a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4, and a D810 with a Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8. As it turned out, I did not use the D810/24-70mm at all. We did three excursions:
1 - KCUPT - La Plata via Southwest Chief, return via bus with stop at Marceline, Mo. (D500)
2 - Overland Park - Ottawa, Baldwin, Topeka UP Depot, & other points via bus (D850)
3 - Overland Park - Argentine (KC, Kan.) yard and Kansas City Logistics Park via bus (D850)
I did take a few photos on Day 2 and Day 3 in DX format so that I could directly load them here. Please note...These have not been processed, and I was unable to take any bracketed groups from the bus to do HDR later. I may be able to recover some shadow detail when I eventually get around to processing the raw images.

Here are a few for your consideration.

On Day 1, I wished I had taken the D850 instead of the D500 to have facilitated some slightly wider views in KCUPT, but what I ended up with was still pretty serviceable. On Day 3, I wish I'd had a polarizer so that I could have tamed the reflections in the bus windows better. I lost some otherwise nice images. Kansas City Union Passenger Station was routinely the second busiest rail passenger station in the US during the heyday of rail travel, afer only Grande Ventral Terminal in New York City. Kansas City was the de facto eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad, and served 9 major railroad lines. It has been beautifully restored.

One comment...I want to emphasize that we were on the platform at La Plata at the invitation of the railroad and of Amtrak. It was just too small and forced us to be too close to the trains, both artistically and for personal safety.
