Depends on your needs, but I recommend something with some power.
Using it inside, once you learn to bounce, you’ll need more than the small toy flashes can put out and the results will be much better.
For fill flash outside, more power can’t hurt either, especially if you want to use high speed sync

For a low budget, I recommend a used Nikon SB-800.
Possibly the best speedlight Nikon made.

I have a pair of Neeweer(sp) flash units that work very well for me! I think I got them from B&H. Pretty affordable too.

You have a great camera that is capable of integrating fully with Nikon's most capable speedlights. I second the recommendation for a SB-800. If you want something small, look for a used SB-400. It can be controlled by the camera's menu system. Just be aware that it sits very low, and can vignette with some large lenses.

I agree with used sb-800. These days can be had for $100. Very versatile. Bit of a learning curve for the menu structure.

The SB800 is Great, but you can only find then used..If you're looking for something REALLY full-featured with high speed sync, and a built i radio slave check out the Yongnuo YN968NII..this Flash also has a built-in video light!. B&H is one of their main vendors.. about $150 usd. I have one of their older flashes with HSS, and have had no issues.,..My next flash will be this Yongnuo!!

Second (or third or fourth) on the 800. Don’t use it much but when I need it, I’m glad I have it.

Love my SB800 but got the smaller, lighter SD500 for my Z50. I prefer the 800, but there's a big difference in weight . And my Z50 is great indoors without flash!

The SB-800 is a fantastic flash unit. The SB-700 is nice too.

I'm very happy with my SB-700, which are available used for $ 200 or less. The SB-5000 is nice too, but pricy. There's a whole host of other products, none of which I have used. Best of luck.

I have the SB300 for my D500, it is small, lightweight, reasonably priced and works well for me.

I use the sb800 on both my d500 and d850 with the adapter that adds the fifth battery and use eneloop rechargeable batteries and am very happy with the results. The down side is the TTL use the batteries fast.

Go to B&H or similar outlet and search Neewer, Godox, Bower, Sigma and all the "related" searches that they'll kick out for you, then pick the one with the best ratings, features, and price that suits your needs. I don't think there's much difference in my experience between 'brands'.

I agree with the sb800 suggestion. I bought mine off eBay for almost nothing because it had a corroded battery terminal. I took the risk and it has been working flawlessly for 3 years now. I also bought a sb600 because the 800 can fire it wirelessly. The 800 is plenty powerful on my d500
