I need to transfer a few videotapes to a flash drive as I want to play on my computer.
What company does the best job so as to render best resolution and audio preservation?
Thank you for recommendations and any suggestions to proceed in another manner.

I’ve used Southtree via Groupon and gotten good results.

I use Fresh Coast Studios - Milwaukee Media. Located in Milwaukee, WI.

They've done a ton of film digitizing for me with excellent results.

414-771-9999...tell the owner Jeff Taylor you got recommendation from "Bill".

If you can play the tape, something like this will work. I used a similar device to copy lots of videos to the computer and then to DVDs.

I just had stereo slides from 1955 digitalized by Smoothphotoscanning.com (973 510 0818)and they were excellent. Quick service and not too expensive. You might call them to see if they can deal with your videotapes.

Couple of questions and suggestions. What are the ID of the tapes? VHS, Hi8, Video 8, Digital 8, Beta Max, other? Most home movie "tapes" are Standard Definition. So if they look good on the screen and are in good physical shape you can "maybe" take them to HD 720P which is a notch up from SD (720x480). If they are the "usual" home movie that is marginal to begin with then you probably want to stay with SD. After you get the transfer you need to think about how to watch the transfer and where the "transfer" will be in a few years. Maybe get an "M-disc" back up DVD or some cloud storage or other more permanent storage than a flash drive. YouTube has a few videos on what to look for with your tape and what to ask for from the transfer house. If it were my tapes I would probably go to someone local -- face to face -- and no "lost in the xxxx" and a committed time frame, cost and quality commitment. Also, maybe just get one done -- look at it and if it meets your standards then give the company the rest. It is great watching the two year old nodding off at the dinner table -- we called it the "super head bob". And he still does it 40 years later.
