Earlier today I got a call: professional photographer bailed, and could I do a prom photo shoot. I don’t have permission to share, but think I did okay.

I’ve said it before: learned with slide film, so I’m not that ‘let it burst’ kind of guy…and was pushing my anxiety taking multiple shots for a given pose, but it kinda worked.

I’m also more of a ‘candids’ kinda guy. Let me catch you not looking, when your real self shines through.

Fortunately Auntie Kayla was there to help. She got the kids posed, got them smiling, told me when to shoot another, suggested good shots.

I picked a good venue…a local park with some nice settings…and most of these worked.

D810 with 24-85D, switching between SB800 flash and on camera flash on an otherwise slightly gray day.

Yeah…got a few out of focus shots (BBF really helped out here…only focus if I moved, picking one subject or the other), a few trees in the head, lots of eyes closed or no smiles.

I think I can pull off 10 to 15 good shots, cropped and exposure tweaks when they pick them. Not sure I’ll do this again, but I think the customer will be pleased.

If I get permission I’ll post one or two.

Going cold into an unexpected job isn't the easiest thing to do. I did a wedding for a friend and I never even knew
what the bride looked like. I was getting my equipment set up in the church and a young woman came up to me
with a sheet of legal paper. It had a bunch of names, like Sue and Brad, Megan and Tom, etc. The still faceless bride wanted their pictures taken. I'm sure your work came out just fine.

Yup…didn’t know who I was looking for, but turned out she knew me.

First pass, I think things look pretty good…lots of right decisions…just also lots of learning.

I feel where you are coming from, George. My photography has always been just for (my) pleasure. Then, I started taking shots of my granddaughter's soccer games. Soon I was taking team photos. Then I took photos of her at gymnastics, and was soon asked to take individual and team photos, and shoot at competitions!

Over the last few years people have seen portraits I did of my granddaughter. Yep, now I'm doing 'Senior' photos, dance recital photos, and other gigs!

In truth, I enjoy doing these photo shoots but, as you apparently felt, my anxiety peaks during them. I hope more than anything that there are a few that are keepers!

Best wishes to you on your journey!!!

Michael

Thanks.

Got permission to share a few, the only two I did some processing on.

This was in a 20 acre park surrounded by an 8 foot stone wall. Key finds were the fountain, an oak tree with a REALLY long horizontal branch, and a rhododendron den.

I like the second shot the best. The fact that they are close together compared to the first pose unites
the composition. The expression on the young lady's face, her eyes, have a somewhat impish playful
quality to them. Cute. You did good!.

The first thing I do at any photo shoot is get the release signed. (Model, Property, Minor)

No release, no photos.

I also like the 2nd shot better.

Her pose is nice in the first shot, but his looks a little awkward.

Very nice. Not my thing either, I do nature and wildlife. I got asked to do a classical concert. I said ok, don't pay me, lets see if they turn out. Turned out ok but was hours of work, with the rehearsal and post processing. Next time I buy a f/2.8 70-200 and have them pay me.

Good shooting for last minute and flying by the seat of your pants. Much better than I would ever do. Looks like you got a job for next year.
