Capture One / Topaz question

So according to Topaz, their SW cannot be used as plugins for Capture One and must be called using the “edit with” functionality. When you do this, a TIFF variant of the image is created, Topaz is opened, operates on the image, and the modified TIFF is returned to Capture One for further editing or export. My question is: must the TIFF be retained as well as the raw image to save the modifications/edits of the image for future exports or other changes?

My understanding is that when you do this you're creating a totally new starting point, so yes, the intermediate tif file is necessary. And if it's like Lr, the tif will stay in the library unless you do something to remove it.

I don't know if you need to retain the raw file but definitely the tiff. Do an experiment on a file that you would toss.

That’s also the way it works as a plug-in with Lightroom. It can’t save your changes to a raw file. Lightroom also doesn’t save any edits to the raw file. It saves them to the catalog or a sidecar file and applies them to the image when it’s displayed and saves them to a JPEG or TIFF when exported.

Does it ask if you want to edit a copy or the original before going to Topaz?

No, it automatically creates a TIFF which is edited by Topaz and then returned to Capture One. Capture One saves edits In a small “blob” file (similar to LR), leaving the raw file untouched. What is different is that it is automatically saving each edit - there is no “save” or “save as” function - you just export the finished edit in whatever format you wish for printing or viewing. I just don’t know if the changes Topaz makes to the intermediate TIFF variant are added to the edits in the “blob”. If it is, I can discard the (large) TIFF. I think I’m going to have to do an experiment to find out - it’s just that Topaz changes can be subtle so hard to tell, hence the question.

Yes, because the modificatimodifications you make in Topaz are in the TIF file. The original RAW file isn't changed.

Thanks for the response James and everyone else. That seems to be the case, but I’m going to run a test to confirm - these 150 MB TIFFs on top of the raw and exported high quality JPEGs eat up memory quickly!

That’s pretty much what LR does. Topaz makes changes directly to the file. It doesn’t write anything to the “blob”. If you delete the TIFF you delete the changes.

Thank you for the information - much appreciated. I really like Topaz products, but accumulating 150MB TIFFS on top of 30-40MB raws and 20-30MB JPEGS can eat up storage pretty quickly, so I think I’ll only save the TIFFS for selected shots. As long as I have the raws, exported JPEGs and the rest of the edits, I can always run them back through Sharpen if I want to export something different. Denoise is a different scenario, since that’s the first thing I do for really noisy high ISO shots. SW magic has a cost

I'm one of those people who expect the bottom to drop off and we will end up with files that can't be opened. I would retain the RAW, TIFF's and JPEGS, memory is fairly cheap but going back to reshoot a moment in time is impossible. I use Phase One with a Firewire 800 cable, a what? See this is what I mean as no one builds firewire that I know of.

To each their own. I use Seagate USB 5TB external drives for storage of my images. Low cost per image. And easy to add/replace with an additional 5TB drive when full. About $100 at Costco and other online sellers.

I hope you back up that drive regularly (if you value the images).

C1 creates a tif it sends to Topaz. Topaz creates a 2nd tiff when you save the finished work and it is sent back to the original folder (if you configured topaz to that path). The second tiff includes the topaz product name in the file name (sharpen, denoise, etc).

you may delete the first tiff.
