There is limited information on the new R7 out on the web since it was just announced. I'm looking to for opinions on the viability of replacing my 7D Mk II with the R7. Based on the marketing hype it appears to be of rugged construction with a rich feature set. Especially the focusing system and frame rate. The camera will be used mainly for action/sports/wildlife. I will use my 5D4 for other stuff. At this time I do not need any alternative brand recommendations. Thanks in advance for your comments.

It's intended to replace your EOS 7DII. But, only you can decide if you've really exhausted the DSLR. Only you can decide if really another cropped-sensor body is better than your glorious full-frame EOS 5DIV.

Clearly the eye-tracking focus exceeds your DSLRs.
Clearly the 30 fps exceeds your DSLRs.
Clearly the DIGIC X is a generation or few beyond your DSLRs.
Clearly the camera IBIS exceeds your DSLRs.
Clearly the EVF outperforms your DSLRs.

Thanks Paul. All of your ‘clearly’ statements are what’s behind my reasoning. Also I want to keep a crop sensor camera as it extends the range of my 100-400 II to an equivalent 640 mm without having to use a 1.4 x converter.
I would be keeping my 5D4 probably indefinitely as I like it a lot. I would sell my Canon 7D2 and little Canon M5 to partially fund an R7.

Ask yourself if all that mirror-based equipment might better be turned into a 45MP EOS R5 ...

I'm going to wait until it's out and see what everyone says about it. The only thing I don't like about it is that the controls aren't like the 7DII that I'm used to. Getting used to a different camera isn't easy. But I do like a lot of the new features including the small price. Canon was smart to release all the full frame R series cameras first because many of the people that shot with the APS-C bodies bought them and won't be buying the new mirrorless APS-C less expensive body's. Personally, I like the APS-C bodies for better reach with my long lens which means less cropping or smaller crops.

Before I buy one I need to find out what the buffer size is. It only uses SD cards, so I don't know how it can write fast enough to keep up with the burst rate.

I love the articulating screen. I have always wished that my 7D II had one. I have always been Leary of them because they seem fragile. I can only imagine what it would cost if the little ribbon cable for the screen goes bad. Also, I see that the dial for the mode selector doesn't seem to have a lock button unless that other button next to it some how locks it. I'll need to see if that is the case. If not, that was one of the problems with the original 7D. It's easy to accidentally bump that dial and wind up in Tv instead of Av mode and that's a real pisser.

I watched several videos on the EOS R7, and R10, yesterday and last night, videos from Canon, Jarred Polin, Kai Wong, the Northrup's and a few others, and they all had plenty of good things, and some less than good, to say about the R7. It intended to be the continuation of the 7D line; sort of a melding of a 7DII and a 90D in an MILC. I really liked what I saw and have read about the R7. Canon now needs to step up and produce good quality lenses for APS-C MILCs.

Thanks everyone on your thoughts. I may wait a bit on pulling the trigger to get some real world reviews of the camera. Several people online doing initial reviews are saying is closer to a 90D instead of a 7D2. Here is a decent review by DP reviews

I too am looking for an upgrade to my 7DII; 80D has some advances but the AF and all the modes etc. aren't there; 90D comes closer but the 32.5MP sensor is very sensitive to motion blur from subject or camera motion and I not a human tripod. When mounted rigid the 90D sensor produces great images.

The R7 specs show it is a true upgrade to the 7DII but I worry about the 32.5MP sensor-one rumor said it is redesigned/not the same sensor in the 90D and the camera has IBIS which will work with the lens's IS to hopefully solve the motion blur. I will start saving to get one with EF>RF adapter when they start shipping and then save for the RF100-500L but I want to see some real world tests/reviews by actual wildlife, bird, sports, action photographers. The one early review I saw with images the quality of the on line images was awful.
If I had been in charge I think I would have given it a new design 24MP sensor or even a new 20MP-after all the 7DII does fine with 20MP.
I will be keeping the 7DII (as a backup), 80D, maybe the 90D and will keep my 5DIV and all the EF lenses because family members have Canon aps-c dslr bodies.

I think these people (Pangolin) used it for close to a week. If not a few days if remembered from the vid. Hope this helps.

It is faster shooting raw than a Z9.
The AF and tracking is about on par with the R3.
Finally is a fraction of the price of either.
If I were beyond dreaming about a new camera this would it as your interests fit into the strengths of the R7.
The reviews so far have been very good.
Jared's review is most excellent and he is pretty honest in his evaluation.
It will really step up your keepers in action, sports and wildlife with the amazing DPAF II AF.
For the price you sacrifice with rolling shutter in electronic shutter of very fast moving objects. But the 15fps mechanical takes care of that and puts you as fast as a D6 which costs many times more.
Go for it!!!!!

It's on sale for Memorial Day as a pre-order. Delaying will cost you money. I doubt you're going to read negative reviews when it's in the hands of the reviewers. You would waste hours trying to find a bad review of a Canon camera. Delaying will cost you! Take this advice from an impulse buyer.

$1500 for the R7 is the most enticing feature! Is a R5 really worth more than twice the cost of a R7?
