I Really Went to Town Today

Yes, I drove into town! Such news to report!

There is a four-lane section of highway in such bad shape that they put up yellow signs and flags - "ROUGH ROAD." That was months ago. Today, one lane is covered with a layer of blacktop - about 3/4" thick.
I bought new eyeglasses, but the price has gone up. The Dollar Tree no longer charges $1.00 for everything. My glasses cost $1.25! Wow! A 25% increase!
Heading home, I was stopped at a red light in a four-lane, 45 MPH zone. Behind me was a NYC Emergency Police truck (We have NYC police here because of the reservoir.) I made a mental note to keep my speed at 45 when the light turned green. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for the police. Looking in the rearview mirror, all I could see was grill. I stuck to the speed limit, and he soon sped past me and out of sight.

Well, that's all the news for now. Have a nice day!

Jerry, you need to go to town more often; it’s amazing the things you learn there. (But I’d hate to live in one! )

Do NYC police have jurisdiction to issue traffic tickets in the Catskills?

After the police passed you, you should have followed behind him at whatever speed he was going. Emergency vehicles are required to obey the speed limit unless they are on call. If he stopped you for speeding, you could perform a citizen's arrest and ticket him right back!

Jerry, I fear that the road conditions across the nation will become far worse. Asphalt is derived from crude and with the war on oil production, all of the 6,000-plus products non-fuel produced from it will eventually become expensive and scarce (perhaps we can go back to environmentally friendly dirt and gravel roads). The same can be said for the thousands of non-fuel products derived from natural gas. Perhaps if the entire world embraced the Amish values and way of life, we will have a much different planet. We can even go back to the old horseback ride by shootings..!

Yes, they do. Locals call them "The Fish Police." They're DEP - Environmental Protection, and that includes the roads. We have town police, sheriff, state police, and NYC. We're well "protected."

Where I live there is a stretch of four lane US highway (about eight miles) that was constructed probably 45 to 50 years ago that is still concrete with asphalt patching. Around 15 years ago they laid down a thin coat of asphalt on the north bound lane and nothing since. Traffic has worn away the thin layer to the point that concrete is beginning to show through. Last summer they removed the old concrete and put down a new road bed and pavement on a section about two miles long. Additionally they laid down a nice layer of asphalt over the old concrete for about four miles on the old concrete of the south bound lane.

The road is a fairly major route for travel from Buffalo to points south through Pennsylvania. The thin layer done several years ago and the work done last summer are the only real improvements on the section since it was originally done. A few years ago I got to ride across that road in an ambulance. Definitely not a comfortable ride in an ambulance a car or on a motorcycle.

Maybe the roads are bad because walls that keep people who want to pick our fruits and vegetables out are more important. These are high paying jobs that we will need soon, the way things are going.

Some years ago a New York television station decided to follow state police cars that were driving way over the limit with no lights or sirens. They showed their speedometer and then showed the police car just cruising along. The cops got tired of that and ticketed the news crews so often that (if I remember correctly) some of the news drivers lost their license and the others decided not to push the point. So you can mess with them if you want but when their sense of humor reaches its end, they will make you pay. Just sayin'.

Or, with less fruit, there will be higher prices.

The police have so many legal exemptions - in addition to a badge and a gun - that you should never give them any trouble.
