I am a few days into my free trial period with it. My first disappointment was that it does not support the raw images from the Sony HX-99 which I was considering buying to succeed my HX-50. I submitted a request, of course.
It's pretty slow. My 2018 MacBookPro is maxxed out for performance. It's no longer the fastest available but it's no slouch.
My next uses would be for my Sony RX10m4 and my Sony 𝜶6500 with Minolta Maxxum Reflex 500/8. They are both pretty good but between the smaller than FF sensors and the good but not fantastic lenses, a little help is a good thing.
My preliminary conclusions are that the product is doing what it claims: improving the sharpness while reducing the noise. I usually shoot at optimal ISO so noise is secondary. That said, not all birds or wildlife are kind enough to stand out in bright sun for me; it's not a zero. In some cases, the difference/improvement is very obvious with pixel-peeping.
Some other reviewers have noted that the app sometimes overdoes what it does and I have seen that. So it's not perfect.
Some details that may interest some:
● The DNG that the app produces can be opened and examined with RawDigger. Doing that shows a lot of interesting differences between the original raw and the DNG.
● The app can export a JPG directly if you choose to.
● The better the original the less the improvement. That's not surprising but it's worth noting. I have no shortage of pics that need improvement. YMMV.
● It works fine on MacOS and both QuickView and Preview can read the output. The files look as they should in Finder. I have not tried Photos but that's a non-issue since the Mac is using the same underlying code for all 3.
● In addition to sharpening and noise reduction the app seems to shift the exposure, contrast and perhaps even color balance somewhat. I don't think it has any settings for that.
Depending upon any questions others may have I may post some pictures to illustrate my points. For now, I'm still working on comparisons via experimentation. I'm comparing raw vs. DNG (using RawDigger and FastRawViewer), JPG's directly produced, JPG's produced by processing the DNG vs JPG's produced from the raw files. I'm using mostly PixelmatorPro to produce the JPG's but also the Sony Edit program as a reality check.
I'm happy to answer any questions. I will ignore the usual trolls telling me they just take good pictures or that real art doesn't need this or that I'm somehow doing this wrong.
Good evaluation documentation, a6k.
" I was considering buying to succeed my HX-50"... a6k... I still use my HX-50 ... great camera. If you have problems with the lens guard, I used silicone spayed on a q-tip and then rubbed on the protective shutter... That fine pocket camera like the old TimeX wristwatch ad... "keeps on ticking [clicking]"
