A guy on YouTube was talking about "the good old days." He said that when a kid in the neighborhood got chickenpox, they would invite all the kids in the neighborhood to a party so they would all get it and get it out of the way. That sounds literally unbelievable.

I had "Chicken Pops", Mumps, Measles and Scarlett Fever. Unfortunately, no parties, but lots of "good old days".

When I was a kid my brother and me got chickenpox all the neighborhood kids came over. So many kids contracted it that they often closed the schools until it was over.

My sister got chickenpox, in the 50s, and my brother and I had it soon after... seemed like no big deal to us... disappointed that it was summer and we didn’t get to skip any school.

However, as we were quickly recovering, our dad got it. He had a really rough time with it.

Chicken pox isn't all that bad but having it can lead to shingles later in life which can be very painful. My bout with shingles was not painful but it almost got into my eye which can cause blindness.

I got it from a good friend of mine. We both had to stay home. That didn't help because soon after they closed all three schools. He just test me a couple of weeks ago and said now he has shingles and if I hadn't gotten the shot right do it now. That's not exactly how he said it but he made it very plain that it is nothing to fool around with, It had been a month since he was able to wear a shirt.

I don't remember having chickenpox, but apparently, I did. When I was considering the shingles shot, I took a blood test that showed I did have it at one time. I remember having the measles, but not chickenpox.

I remember in the 1950s the talk of having Chickenpox parties. I never had it, nor the Mumps. A few years ago my wife's brother came down with Shingles so I asked our doctor to test us. It seemed like a good idea since my brother-in-law was raised in the same household as my wife, although she said she never had Chickenpox. We both tested positive! I must have gotten a dose from some kid in the classroom in the 1950s but never knew it. So we both got the Shingles shots.

I am a retired RN and at one time I worked in a childrens hospital. Sometimes after working a night shift I would stop at my parents home to check up on them and to get a mom cooked breakfast. One morning while I was eating my omelet, my mom asked about my night at work, I explained to her how I spent the night in isolation with a child who was very sick with chicken pox encephalitis. To my amazement my mom stated that I was tho only one of my brothers and sisters who never got chicken pox growing up. I was amazed and also concerned so I was tested and found out that somewhere along the way I must have had a subclinical case of chicken pox.
I learned so much from my mom whild sitting around the kitchen table...miss those conversations.

One day in high school, we had a fire drill... all us adolescents standing outside in delightful Arkansas autumn sunshine and mumbling to ourselves when, Martha Sue Lassiter said, "Fuminous, you got chicken pox!!" Yup, I did... To my knowledge, no one else in school had recently had chicken pox, or got it afterwards... hadn't heard the term, "chicken pox" in years. I drove myself home.... two days later, I had mumps, too. Same situation... My aunt was the Van Buren County health nurse (about 40 years) and said I seemed to be the only mumps/chicken pox case in the county. How the heck did THAT! happen?

We did that with the chicken pox and because we all got it and recovered from it at about the same age we developed the active immunity and never caught it again.
It's not so unbelievable since as a child chickenpox is quite minor although it tends to be much worse the older one gets when they contract it.

Got the "pox" the last day of school in the 3rd grade. (What a way to start the summer, especially in a house with no a/c and only a fan in the living room window). I remember one neighbor bringing her son over to say (ahem) hello. I don't recall if he caught it or not. Flash forward 50mumble-mumble years I end up working with one of the researchers with the first shingles vaccine. He encouraged me to get the shot which I did. I did give him a bit of a hard time when they came up with newer/improved vaccine. He convinced me that he wasn't too involved with that process and not because he needed a new car. <BG>

I got shingles a year ago last April and can tell you it is nothing you want to get. Mine showed up on the left side of my face and damaged a nerve. I still have numbness in my left jaw, cheek and lips although it is “ slowly “ getting better. My wife immediately got the shot. I wished I had.

I'm the oldest of four, and started school in 1953. I brought home measles, chicken pox, and mumps, in that order. My three siblings all caught them, and mom was a wreck for about two months, between me getting over measles, then catching... Well, you get it.

Couple of years ago I got a case of shingles (bothersome at worst). Went to a doctor who confirmed that I had shingles. I protested, "How can that be? I've had the shingles shot", (the old one). He replied, "that just mitigated the severity." What a phrase! Mitigated the severity! It was almost worth getting shingles to hear "mitigated the severity". Unfortunately, not really a useful phrase. Try working in those three words during a conversation. Oh yes, I have since had the latest and greatest shingles shot.
