Monkeypox sounds bad! Awful symptoms. Stay away from zoos and pet stores. 😁
Seriously, it sounds awful.
As a general rule, one needs to keep a distance from monkeys they carry many serious diseases that are transferable to people. I worked in a company where monkeys were used for research. One lady was bitten by a monkey and it was feared that she caught a disease similar to ebola. She had to wait 30 days to find out if she would be dead in 60 days. Fortunately all was OK.

The general consensus is that it is related to human-to-human contact.

Yes, of course. I can't remember the last time I saw a monkey in person - probably because I got that memory-erasing disease from it. Unfortunately, it's our fellow humans who do us the most harm - in every way imaginable.
I read this the other day: The Delta variant didn’t work, so break out the Monkey Pox. Hmmm.

Like the AIDS breakout in the 80's - they speculate a lot before they figure it out...

I'll be worried when it's something bigger, like Elephant Pox or Whalepox.

And TREES. I find my attention drawn to the Norwegian Acer at the bottom of my garden. Should I be worried?

Careful! This could lead to stump disease, which can cause a very painful stump and may even result in the need for its removal.
Older folks who got the smallpox vaccine as kids have some degree of protection. If there is an outbreak of this new one, there is a large supply of smallpox vaccine that will provide some relief.
Monkeypox can be fatal for children and young adults.

I wouldn't count on a vaccine you received 50 years ago...they definitely wane.
Smallpox always comes to mind for vaccine effectiveness...
But long term effectiveness cannot be measured fully with Smallpox...since it has been culled from the wild...last case was 1977. Making conclusions of long term effectiveness...unobtainable.
It is poorly named. Comes from rodents not monkeys
I'm not going to "monkey around" anymore..!!
I'm more worried about Donkey Pox.

When I read about it about 10 days ago, monkey pox seemed to be a condition to avoid, as it can run in excess of 15 days, but the official literature was fairly solid in suggesting that the rate of fatality in developed countries was strikingly near zero. Interestingly, when I went to show a family member the info by sharing a link, the page content was ‘updated’. I ended up sharing the previous page via screenshots, as the page was still open on my computer.
