Sometimes I enter a photos in the Weekly Challenge on another forum. This weeks challenge is textures (5/15 - 5/22). Here's my entry. Paper wasps are not supposed to be aggressive like other types of wasps. Good thing as I got pretty close with my D500 and Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro lens.

He's a good guy. If you can leave the nest alone, leave it alone. They prey on horn worms, corn ear worms, loopers, army worms and a big long list of others.

Great shot. The one on the right is checking you out. If they feel you are trouble than you are in trouble. They sting hard

Wonderful. The queen on the right is larger because she got fed well last fall. Her first two babes are smaller because she had to do it all herself, a single mother; but they will now take over most of the work along with the rest she had reared alone (still-closed cells). Her newest brood should be well cared for - a quick growth of a colony. Now they will add more cells and clean out the old ones as they become available for her eggs, mostly females and a few males to mate with (probably) other colony females to strike out and start new colonies, as some of hers will also.

Very true, but they also eat Monarch larvae. It's a trade off.
Don't get them stirred up. Then you have a flying ice pick with a very bad attitude!!

Some Raid and a pair of quick feet will take care of that. As a kid we chucked rocks at the nest until we knocked it down then ran like hell. More often than not they caught up to use before we could get away. Eventually we learned to leave them alone.

Seriously, nice photo. I don't think I've seen a picture of the embryonic wasps inside the nest before.

Followup: the nest is on the ceiling of the corner of our patio. Went to let the dogs out for the last time last night, looked up towards the nest, and saw a house gecko scurrying around the nest. I think it ate the queen as I could not see her in the morning.

Great picture! I can see some larvae deep in the open tubes.
