Windows 10 updated yesterday and now no matter what I do I have been unable to download new photos from a Z5. I have changed nothing and as far as I can tell all the settings are correct. Anyone else have problems after this Windows update?

Sometimes when windoze updates you also have to update the drivers or apps such as media encoder or camera raw. Also sometimes the default file associations are changed as well.

Has worked wonderfully for decades with no problems ever.
Not sure how you are trying to download but this is a 100% sure way.

My method, as well. Never had an issue. One possible solution is to delete the device from the Device Manager and restart so the computer can rediscover it.

I allow Windows 10 to update regularly - without any problems having been evidenced to date. The only "problem" I have with transferring picture files to my hard drive (SSD or mechanical) is in choosing which one to use of the many means available.

This is how I've always approached the updates for Win 10. I have moved on to Win 11 a few months ago and haven't had any problems with it.
I download by plugging my Camera (Canon R model) directly into the laptop and move the pictures into folders I've created. That's been working out just fine for years..

My Win 10 Home (Build 19043.1706) rebooted and updated automatically Wed. I have not noticed any actual changes. Everything seems to work OK. It scared me a bit when it happened unexpected. Oh, and I use Adobe apps for uploading my files from my cameras, Ps, ACR, Adobe Bridge. I only use Windows Tools for making manual copy and pasting of image files on rare occasions.

They screw up something new in Windows Photo every time there's any sort of update that affects it. I thought it was going to turn into my favorite photo software when first introduced but MS has botched it again, as usual. I still use it to search, but little else. Before that, it was Picasa disappearing. Now I've finally learned that I need to know how the sausage is made and I do it in Windows Explorer as others stated. I open two Explorer windows and open my SD card in one. In the other window, I open my pictures folder on my D drive which is organized into date folders. I create a new folder for today in the proper month folder inside the proper year folder and just drag from the SD card into today's date on the D drive. One caution... if you use several cameras in one day like I do, make sure their sequence numbers aren't duplicated. You can give each camera a different prefix to avoid that problem.

Interesting idea I've never considered. Thanks

Open Settings.
Click on Devices.
Click on AutoPlay.
Under the "Choose AutoPlay defaults" section, the Removable drive drop-down menu and select a new default action when connecting a USB drive:

go to file area in win 10 , click on where it shows z5 click on it
drag the files from the z5 to a directory in your computer and go from there.
or right click on a file inside the z5 and see what windows says about it. They may give you an option to download software so it works.

Earlier this week many of you provided me with good and useful advice. Now allow me to return the favor. DUMP all your Windows products! I have struggled for years with getting their products to work without problems and difficulty. I can not count the number of times a Windows OS has caused my computers to crash. Reliable repair individuals always tell me that it is a problem related to Windows software. Since then I have changed to Apple products and have enjoyed using them. I have had many discussions with people who feel that MS releases products with problems intentionally. If everyone would stop buying MS products maybe things would change.

I won't buy Apple products perhaps because of people like you.
