Personally, I would be happy to walk through “dog vomit slime mold” if it meant I could see the beautiful landscape that you captured in the last photo. 😊

Looks like someone spilled their cottage cheese! Interesting texture when zoomed in.

We went hiking today in the Big Creek drainage in the North Fork area today looking for moose sheds. Didn't find any moose sheds but did find this slimy looking stuff! My first thought was that an animal vomited...that's really what it looked like and it's slimy!

So once we got home I did some research (gotta love google!) and I think I found what it is ...."Dog vomit Slime Mold"...are you kidding me!! Have never heard or seen this stuff in all the years I have been out hiking.

Has anyone else seen or heard of this before?

Perhaps Cany's problem with moose sheds is that moose sheds may be transportable and therefore hard to find. The meeses perhaps could pick them up and carry them along on their travels. Some even may be tents and therefore not really sheds at all. The larger ones used by older meeses may be lean-to affairs that can be dismantled by nature when the weather changes and the moose has moved on to the great Shed in Moose Heaven. While on the subject of Meeses, I must confess to being relieved at the lack of definitive information regarding Moose Vomit Slime, which, if
proportional to the canine variety, would be impressive indeed, especially if one looses one's balance and slides through it! That would be rather hard to explain to one's wife upon returning to the human shed on Wisteria Lane. Those of us in the time block between 79 and 90 might find recovery somewhat troublesome.

Cindy, what an interesting find..! The world around us is full of mysteries and this is surely one of them. I can relate to finding ticks on me for there are times that I believe that I am a tick magnet. I've often wondered how long a tick must sit until something warm-blooded happens to come close enough for it to climb aboard.

I've seen slime molds before, but never any that looked like that. I like Photo 3; any idea how many years ago that area burned?

I knew everyone would get a kick out of that mold and the area up there sure is beautiful! I have spent time on each of those mountains you see in that last shot, either riding the horses, hiking or snowmobiling...so much fun!

That area has burned a few times over the years....1998, 2001, 2007 and most recent one was in 2017.

Slime molds are what decays all the dead trees and yes, they can be interesting and a bit exotic.

Pray tell, what true use is there for such a substance? In my lifetime I cannot recall ever coming across such a thing or substance.

I'll be danged. I've seen a lot of that slicky slimey stuff here in the hills n valleys of the mighty Ohiostan. First time I've heard it named. Ya definitely don't want to step in it on a hillside. Makes for a quick trip to ground level. I'm bettin' it dries up quicker out thar in ootah and montanastan than it does back here. It's one of those things you tend to remember where it's at sos ya don't step in it on your next pass.
