Hi all,
Generally, I do a little research before I post a question about photo equipment to the UHH forum. This is more like a survey, and apologies in advance if this topic seems mundane. So here goes: Does anyone use a soft (shutter) release button? This is that inexpensive accessory that screws into the shutter release button on most cameras. They look nice and personalized, but since they don’t fit flush to the camera body, and have a wee bit of wobble, they raise a concern. I’m curious if these buttons will or can cause any long term damage to the camera mechanism. (Full disclosure; I have one or two, but I’ve never used them since my “well trained” index finger is so familiar with the feel of my camera buttons already...no real need)

What modern digital camera are you referring to that has a threaded shutter button?

In the pass I purchased the stick on ones. They never stayed on.

Nikon has the Df which is now discontinued but many of the Fuji X series have it.

I used a “stick on” one for an RX100. The cameras ergonomics were so “off” for my hands I often couldn’t find the shutter as it is basically flush with the camera top. The convex button made it much easier to find, especially when making a grab shot.

I purchased two screw in soft shutter release buttons for my Fuji X-T2, in black and red because I couldn't make a choice. I put the black/silver on the X-T2 because it compliments the silver/black camera itself, and I thought that possibly the open hole for an optional screw in shutter release might let dust or lint in. Possibly. It does sit up a bit high, but doesn't seem to be in the way. I also have an Olympus Pen-f, that also has the threaded shutter release button. So far the other soft release button is doing nothing in the drawer, as I believe it would stick up way too much on the diminutive little Pen-f, which was one of the reasons I bought it. I should mention that I have electronic shutter releases for both cameras so it's not important that the hole in the shutter release is blocked.

I've used a soft button that had a sticky underside. I like it, as it mad it easier to find the release when I held the camera in the portrait position, but it fell off and I lost it.

I use one on my Fuji just because I liked the way it looked and kept it there. My Nikon has no soft button.

I have those tactile soft buttons that self-stick onto the shutter release button. They stay put and I find them very good.

I had one on an older camera, but it didn't seem to serve much of a purpose. One that looks interesting has the little rubber bumps sticking up so it's very easy to find the button without looking.

These are the ones that I bought, and used on my Nikon D7100 and D7500. I did find them useful in finding the shutter release by feel in the vertical p[osition, but as I stated, they eventually fell off.

Thanks all for your interesting and informative comments. (The information about the “stick-on shutter release button” might be of some help to fellow Hogger – CPO).

CPO here’s a link that might be of some interest to you that was submitted in this post:

No matter what being used…..Happy Shooting.

(I’m also posting this comment directly to CPO who stated an issue earlier in this post).

No. I use a D850 and a D500 neither of which uses the cable release shutter button. But I think I will try to glue, maybe not super glue, one onto the top of the shutter button and see how it works! Thanks for the link!
