"Amateur" has two distinct meanings -- "not for compensation" and "inept." I think Close meant the latter so as am amateur I don't take offense at his phraseology.

"The latter" ??? Possibly you meant "the former" ? Surely you didnt intend to self identify as inept.

Chuck Close, the American painter, visual artist and photographer once said:

Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get the work done. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you’re not going to make an awful lot of work.

His work, some of which was made with a large format camera, hangs in museums around the world. Close continued to make art after he was paralyzed in 1988 and passed away in 2021. His preservation in the face of adversity is inspiring in itself.

I learned about the quote in a blog post by Richard Bernabe. Bernabe was named one of the “Top 30 Influential Photographers on the Web” by the Huffington Post, and is also an instructor for Muench Workshops.

A body in motion stays in motion. A body at rest stays at rest.
Ask not, what your camera can do for you, ask what you can do with your camera.

Right on! Just go out and shoot. Among many throwaways, you just might have a masterpiece.

Not just shoot, shoot with intent.

His quote seems to suggest quantity is the most important factor. But that doesn't really work for me. If I don't feel inspired, I don't take pictures. I have no desire to fill up memory cards with uninspiring images. However, I'm not a professional photographer, I'm a hobbyist. I don't need to continuously capture images to make a living.

Same with me.

I’m reminded of an incident a couple of years ago. A good friend had a show at a gallery near here and I went to the opening. I was talking to her and this guy came up to us and said “I’m an artist too, my art is music”. He went rambling on about how he wanted to be a composer and he went to school for it. Her eyes were starting to glass over and he says, “writing it down is hard, so now I just improvise”. I kept my composure but it wasn’t easy. I wanted to scream, “YOU’RE NOT AN ARTIST IF YOU WON’T PUT IN THE WORK”!
All the great artists, whether it be visual arts, music, writing, dance, jeez cooking even, even if the talent was obvious, produced a lot of crap on their way to becoming great. What made them great, or even those that are just “good”, they all put in the work to get there. Sometimes inspiration just happens, but more often inspiration itself is a product of putting in the work.

As an amateur, and then as a longtime Professional Photojournalist and also a Professor of Photography at a state university I feel there is inspiration all around from nature, from art, from literature ,from others' words, their examples, and their acts, the good and the horribly bad.

But mostly my inspiration is from within my soul. The need to explore, to experiment, to learn, to understand, to grow, to help, to want to change the world for the better. These are the things that drive my work and my passion as a photographer and as a teacher.

Cheers

Neither did Close. John (1971–1972) sold at Sotheby’s in New York, 2005, for 4.8 million!

Well, $4.8 million proves he was a professional, if posthumous riches count.

I never waited around for inspiration--maybe that was my first mistake. I thought inspiration came first, and then you went out and looked for an occasion to make use of it--whether amateur or pro. Sometimes the work itself is the inspiration, yes?

Some amateurs never see the work side of art, just as some pros never see the spiritual side of it. ("Inspiration" is Greek for "getting the spirit," but whether it comes from within or Beyond is anybody's guess. It takes vision to be a pro, but faith to be inspirational. See Stieglitz below.

Since he died in 2021 the sale wasn't posthumous.
