Did you know that the paper that U.S. Currency is made from comes from only 1 company, the Crane Company, and security at that company is tight...if the paper alone got into the wrong hands, like counterfeiters, they'd be able to print some counterfeits that might even fool bank tellers.

• Crane and Co., a Massachusetts-based company, has been providing the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing with paper for U.S. currency since 1879.
• Federal Reserve notes are a blend of 25 percent linen and 75 percent cotton. Currency paper has tiny red and blue synthetic fibers of various lengths evenly distributed throughout the paper.
• It would take 4,000 double folds, forwards and backwards, to tear a banknote.
• No matter the denomination, a banknote weighs approximately 1 gram. Because there are 454 grams in one pound, this means there are 454 notes in one pound of currency.
• Want to measure your notes in a different way? A stack of currency one mile high would contain more than 14.5 million banknotes.
• It is estimated that between one-half to two-thirds of the value of all U.S. currency in circulation is outside of the U.S.

Did you know it's not really paper!

Paper is a felted sheet of usually vegetable fibers. So, why isn't it paper?

The Crane Paper Company has an extremely strong lobby in D.C. which is why any efforts to do away with the $1 note always fails.

All this talk has spurred me to go digging through my $1000 and $10000 bills. I think I’ll go buy a roll of biscuits at Walmart and pay them with a $10,000 bill. And tell them I want thousand dollar bills in change.

Will yard sales go by the wayside?

I stopped at a local yard sale a few weeks ago, and they were taking Venmo, CashApp and ApplePay.

At the rate of inflation you might find that that bill only covers a dozen biscuits

Two other bits of info - I have no way to check if they are 100% pure facts...

$20 bill is supposed to be the most forged bill on the planet.

Every $100 bill tested by the DEA - EVERY bill - showed identifiable traces of cocaine on it.

The so called paper, that paper money is made from is actually a blend of cotton fibers made in to sheets at the crane company as previously noted. If you hold a bill up to the light you can see these fibers along with the anti counterfeiting strips.

There was program on a PBS, History, or Discover channel a few years ago about the Crane company and the process of making the paper.
I remember their being a high percentage of linen used in the mix. Great and informative show.

The plot of Reacher on Netflix involves figuring out how the bad guys get enough real Crane paper to counterfeit $100 bills. It's a great series of 8 episodes and much truer to the books than the 2 Tom Cruise versions of Jack Reacher.

Be well! Ed

There was a case in Florida a number of years ago where a convenience store was raided for non-drug related reasons where the police confiscated a large quantity of cash because it tested positive for cocaine.

The lawyer representing the store got the money back when he went to a bank and withdrew random amounts of currency and it all tested positive.
