My favorite Edit
This is one of the edits I am most proud of. I had taken an indoor shot of a stairway and it was HORRIBLE! I really liked the bones of the picture and was determined to put to good use. I can say i spent hours on this. I have copy of the original ( ithink I was so disgusted I deleted it) the second picture is my fished product! Thanks for looking
Fran
Sorry, but I much prefer the first one.
I would have opened the shadows slightly and kept the dark brooding pic as it was. I might had added something to the stairs, like maybe a spilled wine glass, or a skull, or a single shoe or a tattered political picture. Maybe include a very low opacity pic of a man in a long black coat. The options to tell or hint at a story are endless.
Thank you fantom for your input. I was going for a little crazy, But I appreciate your comments

Fran, I love the result of your hours of fun! For me, the conversation is not about preferring the original over the creative result, but rather does the creative version stand on its own? Obviously, personal choice for anyone viewing - and opinions are always varied in the arena of playful pp. What I love are the textures, curves and colors while the subject remains recognizable. Thanks so much for sharing your joy.
Thank you Linda. My approach was twofold - to make some lemonade from a lemon, and to create some thing, as you said, could "stand on its own". I appreciate you comments

No need for me to add another critique. I agree with Linda! Was all of your editing done in Photoshop?
Thank you Fstop. It was all done in photoshop mostly changes in brightness, contrast, and multiple manipulations of curves.

Fran, photo 2 is one for eye exercising and to keep the jets clean on a printer. This photo has every element and none of standard construction criteria... it is fantastic in tone, texture and shading. It looks as tho it took you many hours of labor to do this master piece, especially considering you did it in PS rather than a modern editing program.
Thank you Don for your critique, As I said, it had incredible bones (standard construction) but great potential for the "not so standard. "It really was a labor of love for me.

I prefer the first one. It gives an air of f mystery. The second one for me is a bit like, let me see how outrageous I can be with this image. And this is from someone who thinks outrageous is normal.
Both images are worthy. The first evokes a sense of mystery or foreboding. The second is full of energy and fun. I like them both.

I am a little awestruck by the explicit details that you were able to wrench from the depth (or in this case height) of almost total darkness. From that standpoint it certainly is a masterpiece. From a strictly impressionable standpoint the original does it for me. I like it . . .
I like the potential of the original image, it could go so many ways. I also like your result - it looks to have been dealt a healthy dollop of one of the less subtle Ps blending modes like colour burn or, more likely, colour dodge. Folk are sometimes hesitant with some of those because the result can be a bit extreme. However you got there it does offer some great opportunities with, say, a Goth model or perhaps Dracula! Keep them coming Fran.

I really like the first one, and might like it even more if it were flipped horizontally so the steps start from the left side. Very nice.
