For other destinations on and around Mount Desert Island check out the preserves run by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, of which there are more than a dozen.

For those concerned about crowds there is the section of ANP on the mainland on the Schoodic Peninsula which has spectacular scenery and is far less crowded than the parts on Mount Desert Island. Even on MDI the portions of the park on the "Quietside," i.e., Southwest Harbor, Tremont and Bass Harbor, tend to be less crowded than the Ocean Drive part. (But watch out for the iconic Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.)

And there is also the part on Isle au Haut, linked to the mainland only by passenger ferry from Stonington. Even I've not been there yet!

The state government had announced a major program of investment in the Maine state park system intended to improve the quality of the visitor experience. The state parks offer many, often less crowded, alternatives to Acadia.

Now that Fall has arrived, there will be many opportunities to photograph fog in and around Acadia National Park. While I often hear visitors lament foggy conditions, the mists can be a great tool for making unique images. For anyone who might be visiting Acadia now, here are two resources for photography in the fog:
