I made this last week on a week long backpacking trip in canyon country. I shot the canyon part during the blue hour and the night sky about 3:00am is about 15 shots stacked to cut down on noise and to increase exposure. Please let me know what you think about it and what I might do to improve it

The foreground doesn't add anything to the photo and is somewhat distracting. I think it's the blue hue - maybe, turn the foreground to b&w.

Wow, what a great capture of the Milky Way! I think the sky part of this shot is excellent. Like ecobin, I recommend working on the lower half of the shot to reduce the blue and to bring out what ever is in the foreground. I worked on it a bit and now know it was some sort of canyon...tough to do in the dark! But do-able.

I like the airplane.
The foreground could be lightened a bit but overall I like the pic.

Fabulous Milky Way image. The download is beautiful, but I agree with others about desaturating the blue foreground.

I can see what you are saying about the too blue in the foreground. I thought that when I added it if I lowered the temp on the color it would be more "night like" I can see, after you pointed it out, that maybe i went to far. I have warmed the bottom of the picture up some and desaturated it some to make it more, but not totaly, b/w. let me know if I am on the right track

Poppie. You are off to a good start but there is definite room for improvement.

1) Warming up the canyon helped for sure. You still have a gradation where the further reaches of the canyon is darker than the foreground. All the same will be more believable. Likely use exposure in between these 2 levels.

2) Sky is going to be improved next time you try this. Individual exposures seem somewhat too long. You have minor trailing/ovals to the stars. This is more noticeable in the lower left.

3) It is hard to say for sure, but I suspect you are not quite in focus on the stars. None of them seem pinpoint. Others seem to be larger than they ought to be. Many have purple fringing. You can read about this in many places but I find liveview focusing is the most reliable.

4) Apply a bit of color noise reduction to clean up the tones in the sky.

5) It looks like your lens might be adding some comatic distortion. Consider testing it with a starry sky and closing the aperture down another stop.

Having said all that...kudos for managing a weeklong backpack with decent camera and tripod. Not easily done.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the feedback. I will agree with you about the over exposure to the stars and I was a little suprised by that as my exposures were only 10 seconds. I have never tried to shoot the stars with this particular lens and I was not really expecting the coma that raised it's ugly head into the edges of the picture.
I will keep playing around with it and see if I get to the point where I am actually willing to print it.
