The other day when I was walking in the downstairs screen door I noticed alot of grass built up besides the door. I looked up under the stairs but didn't see anything. Later on, I noticed birds flying in and out of that space with grass in their beaks. I started watching them work, they would fly in and then drop the grass in the space between the 2x4 under the steps. See Image 2. Later I saw morning doves sitting up in that space. I thought, this great, I'm going to attach my GoPro up there and get a timelapse of them building the nest and later on of the eggs hatching. I got a ladder and climbed up there only to not find a nest of any kind. There wasn't even a beginning of a nest. Everything they brought in they dropped down on the patio below. I put a small piece of square wood across the opening thinking that they would be happy to build on a solid foundation. No go, they have completely abandened this site and haven't been seen in 3 days. Here is a link to some very interesing facts about morning doves.

They probably learned that a photographer lived there (LOL).

Ha ha ha ha. Most likely. A few years ago, I did of timelapse of some Robing eggs right after the hatching and the all through till the last one left the next. The GoPro was set pretty close to the nest. Mom was curious at first but after a while she accepted it. I got some great footage. I was hoping to do this with these Morning Doves.

Many years ago, I watched a dove use an abandoned nest from the previous year. It was in a most deplorable condition, having mostly disintegrated into just a almost flat layer of twigs! By they time they were finished using it, it was almost reduced to just 2 twigs crossing each other! It was literally outside of the office window where I was working. Wish I had taken photos of it...
