I would suggest the shot is too dark for my taste. Also, the foreground is too light and could have been burned in a bit.

That is more like it. The foreground is still a little too light. If you use LR, then do a linear gradient from the bottom. Hold the control key (I think this right) so that the gradient moves up evenly. The trick is to make the bottom very gradually darker so the eye is drawn to the egret. I would apply a combination of clarity, contrast, and dehaze to make the white feathers to pop more. The picture is flat from a contrast standpoint. Finally, add a very slight negative vignette to increase the pop more.
I think the picture has a lot of potential and would like for you to learn how to bring it out. I look forward to seeing the result.
